Ohana California is looking for a passionate and innovative Teacher to join our team! We are seeking an educator who values exploration, creativity, and a hands-on approach to learning. Our ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of sensory-motor development and be eager to incorporate diverse teaching methods to support the unique needs of children aged 6-10 years old.

Ohana California provides alternative education placement for children ages 6-10, offering small ratios and individualized learning approaches. Our focus is on using the best communication tools and learning styles for each student while maintaining access to an age-appropriate curriculum. Our program ensures that every learner receives personalized support in a nurturing environment.
Our Leadership
Dawnmarie Gavin, a leader in spelling-based communication methods, specializes in the Spellers Method, which supports non-speaking and minimally speaking individuals in developing effective communication. Her expertise in alternative education and individual learning strategies shapes the Ohana approach to education, ensuring each child’s unique learning style is honored and supported.
Avital Shuster, the founder of Tumble N’ Dots Pediatric Therapy, brings her expertise in sensory-motor development and pediatric therapy to Ohana. With a background in school-based and private practice as an occupational therapist, she has helped countless children develop essential motor, cognitive, and communication skills. Her approach integrates movement and sensory-based learning to create a holistic and engaging educational experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging, student-centered lesson plans for children ages 6-10.
- Incorporate sensory-motor strategies to support diverse learning needs.
- Foster a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
- Use a mix of structured and exploratory learning methods to inspire curiosity and problem-solving.
- Adapt teaching approaches based on student interests, strengths, and challenges.
- Collaborate with families and the Ohana team to ensure individualized student success.
- Assess student progress and provide feedback to support growth.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Teaching experience with children aged 6-10, preferably in progressive, Montessori, Waldorf, or sensory-based learning environments.
- Strong understanding of sensory-motor development and its role in learning.
- Experience working with neurodiverse populations and a commitment to supporting each child’s unique strengths and challenges.
- Understanding of presuming competence and recognizing that each child learns differently.
- Passion for exploring alternative teaching and learning methods.
- Ability to create engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
