Description

PURPOSE OF JOB: Ohio County Healthcare exists to help make a difference by caring, serving and educating individuals relative to their specific health needs. Through these actions the general health of Ohio County and surrounding areas will improve.  The Supervisor of Hospice Services has 24 hour accountability for nursing services in Hospice and the Hospice program overall.   

 

MISSION STATEMENT: The Ohio County Hospital Nursing Department, including Hospice Services, exists to provide quality nursing services to the patient/customers of Ohio County Hospital and Hospice of Ohio County.  Providing holistic services, addressing physical, mental emotional, social, and spiritual needs by utilization of the nursing process and the interdisciplinary process/concept. 

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Usual working space is a well ventilated area.  Occasional bending, stooping and lifting may be required.  Occasionally may be required to provide direct patient care which requires both fine and gross motor skills as well as lifting and pulling of heavy objects.  Also subject to occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens, radiation and dangerous chemicals when practicing in patient care areas.  Emotional stability and ability to function effectively under stressful circumstances.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

 

Assists in planning, implementing and controlling budget for assigned area. 

  1.  Assists in setting objectives and preparing budgets for the Hospice program overall   

  1. Assists with chart audits 

  1. Identification of capital items  

  1. Establishes work schedules and maintains staffing patterns within budgeted guidelines. 

 

                Provides effective communication 

                 a.  Maintains open lines of communication with physicians. 

                 b.  Acts as liaison between Hospice staff and administration and assures open lines of  

                  Communication in both directions 

                  c.  Assists in direction and coordination of OCH’s performance improvement program for Hospice 

                  d.  The Supervisor of Hospice must possess effective problem solving techniques, using effective   

                 Communication, and demonstrate leadership and decision making abilities and a high level of 

                  Clinical competence. 

 

                 Supervises and evaluates nursing care provided and evaluates competency and performance of staff                           a.  Provides appropriate staff development and orientation to employees within assigned areas  

                  b.  Evaluates the quality of nursing care provided as well as the competency and performance  

                  Of individual staff within assigned departments and submits required reports to Hospice and 

                  Palliative Care Director 

                  c.  Problem solves patient care related concerns as well as employee matters 

                  d.  Assists with departmental policy and procedure development and implementation and assures 

                   Compliance with nursing standards of practice and regulatory agencies.

  1. Shows evidence of prompt and thorough response in handling correspondence, reports and special projects as assigned.  

  1. Maintains safe and therapeutic environment.  

  1. Takes necessary safety precautions.  

  1. Reports any faulty equipment, infection or safety hazards to appropriate personnel and understands completion of event report.  

  1. Uses equipment and supplies in safe, efficient manner. Charge capture methods utilized according to established process.  

  1. Knows and responds appropriately to all emergency codes. Reports to assigned area during emergency event and carries out assigned functions in timely manner.  

  1. Familiar with waste segregation policy. 

  1. Knows and utilizes proper body mechanics.  

  1. Accountable for ensuring patient/staff safety during the course of performing duties.  

  1. Makes appropriate request for supplies or equipment needed.  

  1. Upholds standards of practice and code of ethics for all age groups.  

  1.  Performs all procedures according to established policies and procedures of OCH  and adheres to legal compliance policies and other regulatory issues. 

  1. Recognizes and supports patient rights. Maintains confidentiality in all hospital matters. Adheres to HIPAA policies and Code of Ethics  

  1. Adheres to bloodborne pathogens and infection control/prevention policies including the exposure control plan and employee health protocols.  

  1. Follows and upholds hospital personnel policies.  

  1. Committed to continuous performance improvement/quality improvement and actively participates and supports the organization’s improvement efforts.  

  1. May be asked to be a member of QI Team 

  1. Actively participates in review and revision of policies and procedures as well as in development of new policies.  

  1. Familiar with Policy Tech and Common Share 

  1. Dress and grooming reflect pride in self and the hospital. Adheres to the departmental as well as Explains work accurately, clearly and according to established policy and procedure.  

  1. Maintains BLS, ACLS and PALS provider status as applicable to position.  

  1. Maintains required hours for licensure.  

  1. Attends staff meetings 80% per year.  

  1. Attends mandatory education offerings including annual hospital education.  

  1. Attends 50% of in-services per year.  

  1. Dependable and reliable in attendance and punctuality.  

  1. Perfect attendance – exceeds standard. 

  1. Absent 1-5 occurrences – meets requirement. 

  1. Absent 6 or more occurrences – needs improvement, does not meet standard. 

  

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. EDUCATION: Current active RN license in the Commonwealth of KY.  (Associate or Diploma) required, BSN preferred.  

  1. EXPERIENCE:  Minimum 1 year nursing experience  required,  

  1. REQUIRED: Minimum 1 year nursing experience required 

  1. PREFERRED: One year nursing leadership experience preferred.  Experience in more than one area of nursing, including hospice and/or home health preferred.  Completion of Hospice Leadership Training program preferred (must obtain within one year) 

  1. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  BLS required (if not current, will obtain within 3 months). Must be proficient with patient assessment skills, palliative symptom control, interpersonal communication, and basic computer skills.  Valid Drivers License and proof of insurance.  Acceptable pre-employment health screening (no communicable diseases or disabilities which would prevent the employee from being able to perform the essential functions of the job description in accordance with the American with  Disabilities act.
