The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest environmental specialist in the Division of Environmental and Financial Assistance (DEFA), working at our central office in Columbus, Ohio.

As Ohio EPA’s environmental specialist, you’ll perform critical functions in DEFA’s Office of Financial Assistance that are required as part of administering Ohio’s Clean Water state revolving fund program. You’ll perform independent engineering reviews primarily for the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund, reviewing detailed plans and specifications for issuance of Permit-to-Installs. You’ll review facility plans and specialized reports on infiltration and inflow in existing water system, combined sewer system analyses, and value engineering reports.
You’ll also provide technical assistance and guidance to consulting engineers, communities, public officials, and the public. You’ll participate in marketing and planning meetings, as well as offer project specific assistance in the development of facility plans and designs. As needed, you’ll perform construction management activities and recommend actions to be taken by the agency, and review bid packages and contract award recommendations for the endorsement for funding.
You’ll conduct the final inspections on project construction completions to ensure they conform with program requirements and visit construction sites to monitor the progress of construction and maintenance of existing treatment systems. You’ll coordinate project reviews and determinations with other project team members, consultants, public officials, and other agencies.

- ENGINEERING PREFERRED
- 12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
- OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
- OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
