The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest laboratory scientist in the Division of Environmental Services (DES), working at our laboratory in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
Let’s dive in!
As Ohio EPA’s laboratory scientist, you’ll conduct complex microbiological and chemical analysis of toxic inorganic compounds for effects on the environment and public health. You’ll perform algal toxin and atrazine analysis using ELISA and perform complex ultra trace chemical analysis for nutrients on surface, ground and waste waters, and sediments. You’ll use discrete analyzers, automated titrators, spectrophotometers, and various electrode meters to analyze different samples.
You’ll use analytical balance for gravimetric analysis, interpreting analytical results, and maintaining laboratory records. To prepare samples for analysis, you’ll perform digestions, extractions, and concentrations, as well as prepare chemical reagents and standard solutions. You’ll also interpret operating conditions and maintain instruments daily.
Additionally, you’ll extract and concentrate samples, conduct clean-up of extracts, and the separation of analytes for further organic analysis. You’ll use grinder and gel permeation chromatograph to prepare fish samples and use various extraction systems to prepare other samples. As needed, you’ll also troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment.

- OR completion of Master of Science core program in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science.
- OR 12 mos. exp. as Laboratory Scientist 1, 83291.
- OR positions in Department of Rehabilitation & Corrections & Department of Health must meet 1 of 5 options: (1) Associate’s degree in a medical technology from accredited college or university (2) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification (3) Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; AND 12 mos. pertinent laboratory experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which the individual will be assigned. (4) Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; AND 18 mos. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file. (5) Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of science that included-- 6 semester hours of chemistry; AND 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND 18 mos. documented laboratory exp. in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
- OR equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
