Job Scope: Functions as a Med Lab Tech-Processing providing supports within the Department of Pathology. Position Summary: Functions as a Med Lab Tech-Processing for a clinical pathology laboratory within the Department of Pathology; performs specimen processing, manual computer test order entry, verification of laboratory test requisition entry, and customer service related duties such as answering telephone inquiries and problem resolution of testing samples with physician order and/or specimen collection errors; participates in quality control, continuous quality improvement activities, inventory control, professional development and continuing education within the area; receives requests for pathology archival diagnostic specimens which includes gathering information for processing of requests, locating specimens and communicating with requestors as needed, providing quality data entry of specimens and returning/re-filing specimens to the archival collection; assists with tumor board case preparation by promptly retrieving slides; works closely with other pathology divisions including dermatopathology, renal pathology, autopsy pathology, cytopathology, neuropathology, tissue archives services, pathology consultation office, pathology core facility at the Polaris Innovation Centre, and OSUMC clinical laboratories to ensure clear and concise communications and prompt follow through; maintains communications with medical information management (MIM) and OSUMC privacy officer to ensure policy compliance and to report potential privacy breaches. Job Description Receives and logs non-OSU pathology cases (slides, paraffin tissue blocks, outside pathology report) for 2nd opinion diagnosis; ensures receipt of written documentation for consultation from the ordering physician; ensures receipt of patient's 3rd party payer information for accuracy in billing; uses Beaker to order a consultation case. Answers phones and responds to inquiries from department and medical center staff, pathologists, clinicians, physicians, office staff, nurses, coordinators, patients and/or patient family members; researches, complies and analyzes materials; produces mailings for patient consultation reports and loaned material(s) and ensures proper return of materials to correct facility by packing, labeling and documenting of materials returned; contacts outside facilities to request additional information, demographics/insurance, reports, block/slides, etc. as needed; maintains slides, paraffin tissue blocks in conjunction with histology lab and paperwork in an organized manner to allow ease of access; directs student employees to provide assistance with office tasks and frequent delivery of cases to/from the pathologists or to/from the histology lab. Generates accession numbers for Molecular Pathology (MP)testing cases and orders requested stains and distributes MP accessioned numbers to correct staff/departments upon completion; processes paperwork for Technical Only Stains to ensure prompt testing and accurate billing for tests performed; manages stain request process for Consults which entails: receives stain requests via telephone, email or stain sheet request form; gathers patient demographic information from Beaker as well as entering and ordering stain request in Beaker and then forwarding request to Clinical Histology Laboratory to complete stain process.
