Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries, founded in 1916, is one of the largest providers of rehabilitation services in the State of Ohio.  Utilizing our retail store network, we generate sales revenue to support thousands of individuals with disabilities and homeless local veterans.

The Retail General Manager in Training (GMIT) is designed to provide hands-on learning and development to prepare future leaders for the role of Retail General Manager. The GMIT will assist in managing the daily operations of the retail store, including overseeing production activities and the retail selling floor. Responsibilities include customer service, stocking, merchandising, inventory control, budgeting, and record keeping. The GMIT will also help ensure operational efficiency, safety standards, loss prevention, and smooth merchandise flow. This position involves closely collaborating with senior managers and teams to build leadership skills, manage performance, and oversee store operations in preparation for advancement to a full General Manager role.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • Two to three years of previous retail management experience, with supervision of multiple departments or teams of 15 employees.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in retail or a related industry.
  • Experience in selecting, assessing, coaching, and developing associates, preferably in a retail environment.
  • Full Profit and Loss (P&L) ownership experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in scheduling and managing store staff.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in basic math and computer skills.
  • Broad knowledge of the thrift and resale industry with an ability to respond to competitive challenges.
  • Strong customer service orientation with excellent interpersonal skills, including integrity, respect for individuals (customers, vendors, and employees), and a commitment to diversity.

Supervisory Responsibility

The GMIT will assist in supervising the retail staff, including the Retail Assistant Manager, Retail Team Leader, Merchandise Processors, Donation Attendants, and Sales Associates, as part of the training process.

Role and Responsibilities

· Assist in the overall operation of the retail store, including opening and closing procedures.

· Support production levels and ensure quality of merchandise sent to the sales floor.
· Learn and assist in managing inventory levels across all merchandise lines.
· Monitor the flow of donations, ensuring adherence to standards, security, safety, and state laws.
· Help maintain staffing levels and manage payroll within budget. This includes hiring, training, and managing       store employees according to company policies.
· Oversee volunteers and/or temporary labor as needed.
· Assist with timely reporting, including surveys, production, and sales reports.
· Gain experience in reviewing and analyzing profit and loss statements, making adjustments to store operations based on the data.
· Ensure all daily banking requirements are met.
· Assist with scheduling store staff to ensure adequate coverage and meet store needs.
· Manage time and attendance through the company’s timekeeping program and assist in submitting payroll.
· Communicate effectively via email, phone, and in-person with various teams and divisions.
· Foster a customer-centric environment, serving as a point of resolution for customer complaints.
· Ensure compliance with organizational policies and standards.
· Participate in strategies to reduce turnover through proper training, selection, and motivation.
· Set, track, and assist in driving sales goals.
· Develop and/or implement promotional sales campaigns.
· Learn to develop pricing strategies and oversee their implementation.
· Assist in managing labor costs and other expenses to meet profitability targets.
· Oversee quality of merchandise and select items for e-commerce initiatives.
