SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Orthopedic Spine Nurse Navigator coordinates the care of orthopedic and ortho-spine patients by assisting in the development and implementation of comprehensive orthopedic spine policies and procedures, program criteria and guidelines, marketing, and educational materials, etc. This position reports to the Quality Nurse Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and oversees patient education programs and materials centered around the orthopedic spine program.
- Participates in the education of the patient and/or family regarding the patient’s clinical condition, treatment, postoperative course, warning signs of potential complications, and the patient’s recovery.
- Serves as a resource to patients and/or family with orthopedic/spine concerns, i.e., educates patients concerning what can be expected prior to, during, and after orthopedic procedures.
- Advocates for the unique needs of each patient to ensure that needs are met using facility and community resources.
- Evaluates the patient’s physical and emotional needs before and during recovery after treatment, utilizing appropriate resources as needed. Provides emotional support as needed regarding the surgery process.
- Follows patients throughout the care continuum, including hospital stay, collaborating with inpatient care management resources.
- Facilitates patient continuity of care between hospital departments and programs; works with surgeons and physicians to provide quality care to patients with orthopedic/spine needs.
- Facilitates appointments for appropriate consultations and support services within established protocols.
- Responsible for outreach efforts to establish and maintain positive working relationships with key customers within the community (facilities, hospitals, social services, and physicians).
- Develops quality assurance monitoring program regarding patient outcomes and satisfaction.
- Coordinates multidisciplinary planning conferences, develops concise patient summaries for use by the care team and documents recommendations made by the care team in accordance with nationally recognized patient care guidelines.
- Leads initiatives for National/Local accreditation programs.
- Participates in professional growth and development opportunities by attending various meetings, conferences, and courses.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and follows departmental and Ohio Valley guidelines related to guest services activities in the performance of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Adheres to and follows Ohio Valley’s policies, procedures, and compliance program; works within the set program budget.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in nursing is required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
- CPR (BLS) required.
- Orthopedic and/or spine background or equivalent work experience.
- Previous experience with an accreditation process preferred.
- Proven leadership experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Is able to adequately perform the essential functions of this job; as well as being capable of meeting its functional and environmental requirements.
