About the Job
The Medical Technologist (ASCP) performs accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for diagnosis and management of human illness.
This involves utilizing automation, computerization, and manual methods, as well as responsible quality control and instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.
Key Responsibilities:
- Complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues
- Determining reliability of analytic data before releasing as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment
- Utilizing knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess validity of laboratory data
- Using appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices
- Demonstrating safety and infection control practices
Additional responsibilities include assisting in gathering test data for evaluation of new methods and installation of equipment, and communicating effectively with patients, families, physician office staff, clinical staff, and laboratory associates.
Quality Assurance Functions:
The Medical Technologist (ASCP) performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc., documents and interprets QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance.
Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.
Requirements
An Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences (Required), along with MLT - Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and a Field of study in applied science or medical laboratory technology including an MLT internship in a laboratory or formal military experience followed by successful completion of the Board of Registry examination of the American society of Clinical Pathologists.
