Job Description

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism (JOUR) in the Scripps College of Communications at Ohio University is among the oldest and most renowned journalism programs in the United States. We are recruiting for one full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Journalism with an emphasis on Communication Law. This position is based on our campus in beautiful Athens, Ohio, and is set to begin August 16, 2025.

The successful candidate will have expertise in communication law and be able to teach in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Primary teaching duties will be to teach the core Communication Law course; additional teaching assignments will be based on the successful candidate’s professional background and teaching interests. Applicants also should have successful records of research / creative activity in the area of communication law, especially as it pertains to the First Amendment, copyright / publishing, social media, and open-government laws in the U.S.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • 5 years of professional experience related to communication law.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with extensive professional experience related to communication law who will have earned a Ph.D. or J.D. by the start date (August 16, 2025).

This position will typically have a workload of 40% teaching / advising (two courses per semester), 40% research / creative activity, and 20% service / shared governance. New faculty are eligible for a one-course teaching reduction in their first or second year, a generous start-up fund for research / creative activity, and $2,500 / year in travel expenses. Salary for the appointment is competitive and based on the candidate’s credentials; the candidate also will receive Ohio University’s generous benefits package including health care coverage, retirement, and additional benefits.
