American Sign Language Interpreter: Deaf Studies (Temporary Pool)

Provide sign language interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees (faculty, staff, and managers). These services may be required in various settings, including lectures, group discussions, collaborative projects, campus events, workshops, seminars, department and team meetings, professional development activities, and emergency or crisis response situations. The sign language interpreter is responsible for maintaining professional ethics and adhering to the RID Code of Professional Conduct. This position requires fluency in both English and American Sign Language, along with a high level of mental focus. Interpreting assignments are based on the needs of Deaf employees and the District, including highly sensitive interactions between the District and employees.

This position requires current NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, and/or CI/CT certifications


$65.00 Hourly, 2-hour minimum.

This is a temporary position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation and transliteration services in American Sign Language (ASL), or other appropriate methods to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in a variety of educational and administrative settings.

  • Facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees and hearing faculty, staff, and peers in diverse settings such as meetings, instructional sessions, workshops, events, and other related activities.

  • Analyze environmental factors for effective communication, including lighting, seating, visual aids, and technological tools; suggest adjustments to enhance accessibility.

  • Interpret lectures, presentations, discussions, and activities, conveying information effectively into spoken English for Deaf faculty members’ courses.

  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, technical vocabulary, and subject content to ensure accurate interpretation.

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders; collaborate with faculty and administrators to address individual needs and enhance accessibility.

  • Stay current with advancements in interpreting practices, technology, and relevant legislation through professional development and ongoing education.

  • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity to individuals’ diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment.

  • Perform related duties as assigned to support accessibility and communication needs.

Minimum Qualifications


Bilingual (ASL and English)

Certified ASL Interpreter: NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, CI/CT Certified

AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and Deaf community as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Conditions of Employment
Offers of employment are contingent upon Governing Board approval. Employment with Ohlone Community College is not complete or official until applicants meet all pre-employment requirements. Ohlone Community College does not sponsor H1B visas. Employees must sign the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and submit fingerprints for CA Department of Justice clearance. Employees must be California residents on their date of hire and for the duration of their employment with Ohlone Community College District.
