Department OverviewThe Licensed Practical Nurse is a valuable member of the Occupational Health team, a section of Human Resources dedicated to the detection, prevention, evaluation, and treatment of specific job-related injuries and / or illnesses. The department also provides health education for OHSU employees and volunteers. Occupational Health's exposure control and compliance programs are critical to keeping OHSU staff and volunteers healthy, which also protects the patients, students, and community we serve.Key responsibilities of the job include screening for occupational risks, the placement and reading of tuberculin skin tests, phlebotomy for titers and other labs, administration of immunizations, fit testing for N-95 masks, color vision, and data entry. Other duties include rooming, maintaining clinic flow, answering phones, administrative coordination, data entry, stocking supplies, and exposure management support.The Licensed Practical Nurse reports to the Manager of Occupational Health, functions within the LPN Scope of Practice (as defined by OHSU) and works under the clinical direction of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Medical Director. The LPN must demonstrate effective communication skills and an orientation to customer service.Occupational Health is committed to providing exceptional service to our customers : this includes OHSU's employees, volunteers and other departments with which we collaborate. Occupational Health works closely with Student Health & Wellness Center (Student Health), Infection Prevention and Control Program, Environmental Health & Radiation Safety and Risk Management.Function / Duties of PositionProvides Safety Compliance Services :

  • Receives phone calls and e-mails responds or directs request to the appropriate individual or department
  • Reviews new and existing workforce member information to identify appropriate risk categories, based on job responsibilities and OHSU's policy on "Required Communicable Disease Screening, Testing, Immunizations and Training" policy
  • Administer Immunizations
  • Places and reads tuberculin skin tests (TST)
  • Performs N-95 respirator (mask) fit testing
  • Performs color vision screening when required for an individual's job
  • Collects laboratory specimens to check immunity status, as needed, or in follow-up to a suspected exposure
  • Monitors refrigerator temperatures and performs other quality control measuresDirect Patient Care :
  • Performs care / treatment / counseling of employees in a manner which provides for employee privacy, confidentiality, physical and psychological well-being while conforming to Occupational Health policies
  • Conducts patient interviews for assessment of workplace injuries / illnesses, bloodborne pathogen and communicable disease exposures
  • Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating employee care plans
  • Provides basic first aide as appropriate
  • Collects and records information regarding patient's physical and psychological condition; summarizes and presents information to the clinical team.Documentation :
  • Enters complete and accurate documentation into Occupational Health record system
  • Completes and / or coordinates completion of reports as required by state and federal agencies and the organization as it relates to OSHA, Worker's Compensation, Infection Control, Environment of Care.Program Support :
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of seasonal programs, such as the flu vaccination campaign, onboarding of new residents, health fairs, etc.
  • Designs and implement training programs to ensure employee safety
  • Monitors trends and causes of employee safety events and work with colleagues to identify areas of safety risk
  • Provides education and training to occupational health staff as necessaryOther :
  • Keeps abreast of current trends in occupational health screening and immunizations by reviewing journal articles or attending conferences / webinars
  • Assumes responsibility for own learning and professional development
  • Maintains license / certification through continuing education
  • Other duties as assignedRequired Qualifications
  • Current BLS certification at hire.
  • Possess a valid Oregon Practical Nurse License at the time of appointment.
  • OHSU may require training or experience in a specialized area of nursing at time of recruitment.
  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of work experience in a medical office setting, including high volume direct patient contact in both front and back office.
  • Experience working in an occupational health or public health setting.
  • Computer skills, including use of an electronic health record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of diverse. customers in difficult situations.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Ability to prioritize work demands.
  • Ability to interpret and follow policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Basic applied math skills, including calculations and conversions.
