Installs, maintains and operates traffic signals and signal systems in compliance with regulations and code. **This is a fluid position, meaning there is a career path in this position that has an established criterion that outlines advancement opportunities. Upon you gaining experience and the furthering of education and/or gaining of certifications, advancement is readily available. • Installs, maintains and repairs traffic signals and related signal systems; ensures work is conducted in accordance with applicable statutes and directives. • Prepares and maintains records and documentation concerning work performed (i.e., time sheets, work orders, equipment utilization reports, issue slips, cost sheets, leave requests, safety meetings). • Ensures utility companies and other services are properly notified in reference to items such as buried cables. • Operates hand-held and electrical equipment (i.e., controllers, conflict monitors, flashers, load and time switches); inspects and maintains safe operating condition of equipment. • Performs preventive maintenance on traffic signals and signal systems; ensures proper use, care, cleaning and adherence to maintenance schedules. • Assists Traffic Operations Supervisor in tracking supplies and material stocks for ordering; ensures necessary parts are available and restocked as used. • Performs other duties as assigned.Traffic Signal Technician I Minimum Training & Experience: Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in electronics; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Availability to respond to declared emergencies/on-call outside of normal duty hours is required. Experience with traffic signal systems installation, maintenance, and repair preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires valid driver license. Requires International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I within 18 (eighteen) months of employment. Requires IMSA Traffic Signal Level II within three (3) years of employment. Must obtain a Work Zone Safety Certification within six (6) months of hire. Must obtain a valid class ‘B’ commercial driver license (CDL) within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) badge. Traffic Signal Technician II Minimum Training & Experience: Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED; supplement by a minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in electronics, preferably in traffic signal systems maintenance and repair, to include knowledge of centralized system file maintenance, skilled identification of malfunctions and inefficiencies in systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Availability to respond to declared emergencies/on-call outside of normal duty hours is required Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires valid class ‘B’ commercial driver license (CDL). Requires International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I and either IMSA Traffic Signal Bench Technician Level II or IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II. Requires certification levels I, and II of the International Municipal Signal Association (Level III preferred). Must obtain a Work Zone Safety Certification within three (3) months of hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) badge.Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate a variety of hand held and electrical equipment and tools including bucket hoists, road saws, and generators. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 20 to 50 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Position requires exposure to outside atmospheric conditions and working for prolonged periods on feet. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso for working on scaffolding, climbing ladders and/or working in confined spaces. Must be able to traverse irregular or uneven terrain frequently. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. Language Ability: Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions Requires the ability to read a variety of records, reports, policy and procedure manuals, codes, professional journals, etc., ranging from moderately complex to highly technical terminology. Must be able to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of grammar, spelling, diction and punctuation. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where limited standardization may exist; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; use decimals and calculate percentages; determine weight; compute discount and loss, ratio and proportion; interpret graphs. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergencies and frequent deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
