JOB SUMMARY: Applies basic level knowledge to read and record natural gas meters while driving or walking an assigned route for the purpose of recording gas consumption on customers’ premises or business.
Incumbents in this position will be held to the District’s Gold Standard for Customer Service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Applies basic level knowledge to read the consumption index on gas meters along an assigned route and acquires data (meter-readings) using a hand-held device or mobile reading unit from an automatic reading unit (AMR).
- Inspects the meter to ensure the equipment is functioning properly. Reports defects or damaged meters by coding the information into the meter reading device. Observes the meter area for gas leaks; if problem exists, reports to supervisor and/or dispatch.
- Conducts Read-Verify checks.
- Conducts equipment surveys along route by entering specified information into the hand-held meter-reading device.
- Provides support to repair technicians during gas leaks or emergency situations and assists with notifying customers of outages. May be required to turn gas off at meter while leak is being contained and assist in relights.
- Safely and responsibly operates the automotive vehicle assigned. Maintains assigned vehicle through appropriate operator maintenance and keeps said vehicle clean and neat at all times.
- Maintains tools and equipment in a clean and prescribed manner.
- Inspects for atmospheric corrosion on meter sets.
- Other miscellaneous job-related tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School plus zero to two years of experience.
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:
- Must have ability to meet and deal effectively with the public and work with people in a tactful and effective manner.
- Ability to safely drive and maintain a motor vehicle. Must possess and exercise good defensive driving skills.
- Must have good eye/hand coordination and be physically able to withstand extremes in weather conditions.
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly, including the ability to see or read a number up to 7 digits and accurately repeat.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Exhibits a working knowledge of street locations in system area.
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Capacity to learn the use and download of a meter reading device.
- Skills to use a personal computer and ability to use additional smart devices and applications required of meter reading.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTORS:
- Must be appropriately dressed in a clean and neat District authorized uniform during work hours.
- Must possess and maintain valid Florida driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the District and its insurers.
- Regular attendance is essential.
- May be required to work other than normal work schedule.
- May be required to work overtime with little notice.
- Physical Effort: Requires extensive walking, driving, bending, stooping, crawling, climbing and moderate lifting.
- Working Conditions and Hazards: Works primarily outside and is exposed to rain and seasonal weather extremes. Exposed to fires, toxic fumes, electrical shocks from high voltage, and dog bites.
- DRUG TESTING FOR ILLEGAL DRUGS: Employees in this classification will be subject to undergo testing for illegal drugs in accordance with DOT Pipeline Safety Regulations, Code of Federal Regulation, Title 40 (49 CFR), Part 199.
