Office of Public Defense Director
Okanogan County is now accepting applications for the position of Public Defense Director. This is a full time exempt position with a salary of $12,500 per month and a generous benefit package including: Medical, dental, vision, employer paid life and disability insurance, retirement, 11 paid holidays and 2 floating holidays, sick and annual leave accruals.
This position directs all legal and administrative functions of the Public Defender’s Office serving indigent clients. Accountable for the efficient and effective performance of the Department and the preparation of timely and professional service/advice, analyses and reports as a basis for planning, funding and implementation of policy. This position reports to the Okanogan County Board of Commissioners or designee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Plans, organizes coordinates and directs the operations of the Office of Public Defense, in accordance with State and local laws, rules, regulations and standards, including, management of contracts for indigent defense services, operations related to indigency screening and pre-trial services.
· Represents the interests of indigent defendant clients at legal proceeding including, but not limited to, first appearances, arraignments, pre-trial motions, guilty pleas, sentencings, trial and post-trial matters, including restitution hearings probation violations, sentence reviews, filing of notices of appeal.
· Instigates or responds to plea bargaining negotiations on behalf of defendants and represents defendants’ interest in negotiations.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
Must be licensed to practice law in State of Washington and must remain a member in good standing of the WSBA while holding position of Director; and five (5) years’ experience in felony criminal litigation and have prior experience as lead counsel in no fewer than four adult felony trials in which the State has rested, at least one of which was submitted to a jury and at least one of which was a Class A felony.
