Assistant Director (Post-Doc Position)

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of the Oklahoma Center for the Humanities (OCH) is a one-year postdoc funded by the Mellon Foundation and renewable annually for up to three years. The AD should be actively engaged in research on topics related to democracy, sovereignty, history, literature, art, and culture in Native American nations. Experience in public humanities and/or Indian Territory and Oklahoma is welcome, but not required. The AD will report to the OCH Director to help design, budget, implement, and assess programming related to the grant’s core themes. The AD will take a leadership role in implementing gallery exhibitions and public programming at 101 Archer in Tulsa’s downtown Arts District.

Characteristic Duties

• Develop, publish, and support original research on cultures of democracy in Indian Country.
• Assist the director in managing administrative aspects of the OCH, including budgeting, event management, and assessment.
• Organize and manage grant-funded events at the OCH, working with partners and constituencies both on and beyond campus.
• Work with the director to design, budget, execute, and assess exhibition and programming at 101 Archer focused on three topics funded by the grant: indigenous cultures of democracy, re-imagining citizenship, and shared futurisms.
• Participate in grant-supported meetings and seminars designed to create interdisciplinary, community-engaged, collaborative programming.
• Help oversee administrative staff engaged in the day-to-day operation of the OCH’s digital media including Facebook, Twitter, and a website.
• Draft, edit, proof, and produce print and digital materials to promote events, engage the community, and disseminate the OCH’s work.
• Assist in the operation of the 101 Archer gallery as needed by conducting tours, engaging the public, and managing the space for events.
• Light physical labor required including the ability to help move chairs and tables and assist in hanging light displays.

Minimum Qualifications

Recent PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences; excellent writing and communication skills; ability to plan complex projects, juggle multiple initiatives simultaneously, and work effectively within a team. Documented interest in the history and culture of Native American nations strongly preferred. This is an in-person position based in Tulsa, Oklahoma that requires periodic evening and weekend hours to support public programming.
