Job Summary:

Reports directly to the Facilities Management Landscape Services Assistant Manager and works closely as a team with Landscape Services Department shops; Design, Installation, Maintenance and Shop Support.

Responsible for the operation of the central irrigation management and monitoring software and master controller. Performs irrigation installation, maintenance and repair work; supervises the irrigation team; and reviews irrigation plans and contracts to meet OSU irrigation standards.

Will work closely with Facilities Management departments and staff, vendors, contractors, as well as have frequent contact with campus administration, faculty, staff and students.

Employee in this position is required to be on rotating standby for emergencies and/or any other event including weekday evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays.  Employee in this position is required to work overtime when work requires.  Employee in this position is required to work shift work when work can't be accomplished during regular hours, and when the Management staff deems necessary.

Must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks, and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management; therefore, deeming you as essential personnel requiring you to come into work regardless of the weather conditions. This may require work during nonbusiness hours which include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays and when the University is closed.

Working conditions may exceed lifting 50 lbs., frequent shoveling and hand digging, assorted tool use, equipment noise, chemical smells and noxious fumes, exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures and all types of inclement weather.

On-call, overtime including weekend and evening assignments will be required.

Will be required to work outdoors during extreme heat and cold, operating hazardous equipment and handling hazardous chemicals. 

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use. 

Must work safely and promote a safe environment.

Due to communication expectations of this position, the incumbent will be required to maintain a personal cell phone and will be required to be continually available during and after normal working hours. The incumbent's salary includes compensation to apply toward the use of their personal cellular device.

Blackout Leave Periods: Landscape services has three identified blackout periods each year. No leave will be approved during these times.
Leave requests will not be approved for the month of May, August, and October until the dates for each event listed below are posted with main campus.
1. Two weeks prior to First day of School for Fall Semester
2. Two weeks before Homecoming
3. Two weeks before Spring Commencement

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

High School/GED

Four years of landscape maintenance, irrigation, or other related experience and supervisory work;

OR Two years post-secondary education in an irrigation, landscaping, horticulture or related experience.

Stable work history.

Have before hire and maintain after hire a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

Strong attention to work detail, leadership, decision making, and organizational skills.

Strong work ethic, intense drive and initiative for quality and customer service.

Strong supervisory, leadership, management, and coaching skills

Ability to motivate, evaluate and effectively supervise staff as a team.

Ability to train and direct the work of others.

Ability to use a shovel and other plumbing tools, irrigation trencher, lift 50 lbs and work in inclement weather to meet the physical requirements as determined by the position and job duties.

Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.

Strong communication skills to team both written and verbal.

Advanced computer skills.

Knowledge of manual and/or computerized irrigation systems.

Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety instructions and procedures.

Sufficient math skills to be able to calibrate water application rates, evaporation rates, and usage rates.

Ability to multitask and coordinate projects through to completion and in a timely manner.

Knowledge of soil types, plant needs, and weather reports.

Knowledge, keen understanding, and operational skills of irrigation and plumbing systems.

Ability to read and decipher landscape plans and irrigation manuals.

Ability to install, operate, troubleshoot, and repair manual and/or computerized irrigation systems.

Ability to perform irrigation tasks such as operate timers, clocks, and controls for sprinklers.

Must be able to work under minimal supervision.

Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.
