Responsibilities:
Staffing and Supervision: Recruit, hire, train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate staff including: (1) Coordinator of Outdoor Adventure (1) Graduate Assistant of Outdoor Adventure (25) Outdoor Adventure student employees. Foster a positive and collaborative working environment, focusing on student growth and leadership development.
Program Management: Develop, schedule, and oversee all Outdoor Adventure operations to meet the needs of the OSU campus and surrounding community. Plan/attend, coordinate, and implement policies and procedures for outdoor operations, including risk management, trip support and special events. Oversee and grow the Outdoor Adventure program offerings, equipment rental program, route setting, and operations to increase engagement and usage by the university community. Create and oversee the OA fiscal budget continually monitoring revenue and expenses to ensure programs are financially sustainable and aligned with departmental goals.
Equipment and Facility Oversight: Oversee the management of the inventory, rental system, and replacement of all outdoor adventure equipment. Perform regular inspections of outdoor equipment and facilities; document maintenance and coordinate with the facilities team for repairs as needed.
Partnerships and Collaboration: Build strong partnerships with campus departments to support academic programs and enhance collaborative efforts. Ensure quality controls for outdoor adventure experiences and workshops for various stakeholders including students, campus partners, public schools, non-profits, private schools, and corporate organizations.
Safety and Compliance: Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspections to ensure safety standards, cleanliness, and guest satisfaction. Maintain all required certifications related to outdoor adventure operations and staff training. Regularly update and review operational and employee manuals to reflect current best practices.
Assessment and Reporting: Prepare and maintain daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports as well as program assessment records. Assess and report on all aspects of the position to support alignment with NIRSA and CAS standards.
Training and Leadership Development: Assist with the department’s student employee leadership training initiatives. Conduct routine OA staff meetings. Foster a strong learning culture for student employees, helping them to build enthusiasm and a deeper understanding of the learning process.
Professional Development and Industry Engagement: Attend local, regional, and national conferences to stay informed on industry trends, best practices, and standards. Incorporate findings from professional development opportunities to enhance programs and services. General Responsibilities: Participate in regular departmental and leadership team staff meetings. Support department- and division-and university wide programs and initiatives. Maintain a flexible schedule, including occasional nights and weekends, to meet program needs. Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in Leisure Studies, Recreation Mgmt, or related filed
Minimum of two (2) years of experience administrating a large outdoor program. Experience developing a large budget dependent upon revenue generation. A strong background in risk management, especially as it relates to outdoor programs. Comprehensive knowledge of outdoor equipment rental procedures and operations.
Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, hire, supervise, train, and evaluate staff. Candidate must be able to identify current outdoor industry trends and execute risk management strategies related to outdoor programming. Proficient in rock climbing and belaying skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Health, Leisure and Performance Studies or related area
3-5 years of experience administrating a collegiate outdoor recreation program strongly preferred. Experience managing a rock wall and/or challenge course. Previous experience supervising at least one full-time professional staff member. Experience supervising large staff. Involvement within AORE, NRPA, NIRSA, or other outdoor programming associations.
Current certification from an appropriate outdoor related association such as American Mountain Guides Association's (AMGA) Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certification and the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level I or II certification, Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Leave No Trace, CPR/AED Instructor.
Experience training staff to facilitate challenge course low and high element experiences.
