Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of EHS, provides professional expertise in the operation of Environmental, Health and Safety programs to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, national consensus standards and OSU safety policies and procedures.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law
Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention
Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker’s compensation claims
Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics
Provide oversight of Occupational Safety programs including performing safety audits and inspections
Provide consultation relative to Occupational Safety
Participate in site safety meetings

Supervisory responsibilities: Three full-time staff.
Regular exposure to physically demanding and hazardous tasks including walking for long periods of time, bending, stooping, lifting, standing, reaching, and climbing stairs and ladders. Must pass post-offer physical exam and be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment. Must have the physical ability to access all levels of construction through use of construction equipment. Must be able to discern colors, read small print and ability to clearly communicate on the job-site.
Due to communication expectations of the position, the incumbent will be required to carry a department-issued cell phone.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, or a related field and three years of experience required working as a safety professional, an Industrial Hygienist, and/or in public health.
Have before hire and maintain after hire a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties
as assigned.
Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED. If needed, certifications will be provided by the department within six months of employment. Additional recertification will be provided throughout employment as required to remain up to date.
1. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. 2. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. 3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 4. Expert knowledge of OSHA Regulations. 5. Working knowledge of CDC and American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Regulations and a working knowledge of the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). 6. Computer skills to include operation and utilization of various software programs including MS Office. 7. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from University Personnel and others. 8. Must pass pre-employment physical exam and be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment. Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a field relating to Safety, Public Health, Workers’ Compensation, or Industrial Hygiene and five or more years of related work experience that includes occupational safety, accident investigation and analysis, and workers’ compensation efforts. Preference to applicants with a background in a research setting, especially higher education.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
Certified or eligible for ABSA (RBP or CBSP).
Member/Associate of AIHA.
Salary : $65,000 - $90,000
