Under the direction of the Chief of Police or designee, the work of the ACO involves patrolling areas of the Town to enforce Animal Control Laws, Ordinances, related rules, and regulations. ACOs must be able to pick up animals in distress, strays, injured animals, and dead domestic animals, as assigned. The ACO enforces town and state animal laws and regulations, including but not limited to cruelty to animals, dangerous/vicious animals, and animal bites. Qualifications • Must possess a current and valid certificate as an Animal Control Officer issued by the New Jersey Department of Health • Valid N.J Driver's License and N.J. resident • Knowledge of the types of types of equipment in animal control. • Must be available for emergency, on-call incidents. • Must be able to use computer equipment and be trained in the computer program specific to the animal control division. • TWO (2) years of experience in animal control • Knowledge of the common communicable diseases of domesticated and wild animals and the methods of control • Ability to interpret and enforce applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations and apply them to specific situations • Ability to recognize sick or injured animals and to arrange for medical care • Ability to handle complaints regarding animals and take proper remedial actions • Ability to handle confidential information in a secure, professional and discretionary manner • Must be able to work independently within a team structure • Must be able to lift or move up to 100lbs. occasionally, 50lbs. frequently, and 20 lbs. constantly • Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and complete repetitive motions regularly. • The position will require weekend, on-call, and holiday work. • Must have computer and filing skills. Responsibilities • Animal Control Officer is responsible for performing various animal control- and animal-care-related duties, under supervision humanely and professionally. • Patrol, capture, and impound both domestic and wild animals. • Capture and impound animals suspected of being rabid. • Enforce Animal Control laws and ordinances. • Picking up/trapping stray, injured, ill dogs or cats, utilizing knowledge of humane methods of handling and capture. • Transport sick and injured animals to a veterinarian's office or proper rehab. • Respond to animal complaints or concerns. • Assists and advises the public of laws and ordinances about the care and confinement of animals • Cleaning/feeding/caring for the animals housed at the animal shelter, following disease control protocols, and observing their physical condition and behavior. • Completing reports, maintaining records, and making notifications and referrals • Promotes the adoption of animals and arranges for their necessary medical treatment • Maintaining a clean, safe, fully stocked and well-organized work area and vehicle • May Be certified in legal, humane euthanasia methods • Testify in court for alleged violations of the law. • Be available to work in an emergency, including weekends, evenings and on-call.

Salary : $33,700 - $42,600
