Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Designee, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well being of participants using the Old Colony Y aquatic facility.

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Designee, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well being of participants using the Old Colony Y aquatic facility.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Program Responsibilities
- Arrive on deck, in uniform, ready to open pool promptly at scheduled time.
- Complete all required opening and closing lifeguard checklists to ensure the pool is safe, organized, clean and ready for members
- When actively guarding, maintain consistent scanning pattern, 5 minute strategy, and complete guard rotations ensuring proactive bottom scanning when coming on and off stand
- Know and cover your assigned zone of protection. While each guard location is validated for your zone of coverage, know you have flexibility to move at any time if you are not able to see any area designated
- Wear appropriate lifeguard attire including red shirt/bathing suit, whistle, hat/sunglasses if outdoors/in sunny environment, lifeguard tube/safety pack
- Ensure all youth age 12 and under, as well as weak or non-swimmers of any age are in coast guard approved floatation, or have passed the Old Colony Y Swim Test and can be identified by wearing a green swim bracelet.
- Actively use your whistle to enforce all pool rules including swim test policy, no breath holding, no running on the pool deck, no diving, etc. Do so with a friendly, yet serious and unwavering disposition
- Practice the 5 second rule and be prepared to respond to any member who is under water/whose face is under water for a count down from 5.
- Attend the required number of in-services monthly and ensure rescue readiness at all times.
- Report all accidents and incidents to supervisor on appropriate forms.
- Attend all staff meetings scheduled by supervisor.
- Secure ALL pool doors at the end of your shift unless properly relieved by another

- Facility/Housekeeping Responsibilities
- Off stand responsibilities include:
- Properly test water for chemical balance and record at assigned times. Report any problems immediately to Head Lifeguard.
- Check all safety equipment at the beginning of the shift, reporting any problems in writing to supervisor.
- Follow daily maintenance schedule as assigned including hosing deck, brushing down pool walls, cleaning staff office, reporting all problems in writing to supervisor.
- Maintain highest level of cleanliness in pool area.

- Strong swimming ability

- Must be able to perform all physical tasks of a Lifeguard as well as lift an adult male from the pool onto the pool deck.
- Complete program specific and employee orientation training by required timeline.
