Position Overview
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors at Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School. This role includes daily cleaning, maintenance, and light repair tasks to ensure the school building and grounds are functional and presentable. The Custodian plays a critical role in supporting a healthy learning environment and meeting state and local health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wax floors.
- Dust and sanitize surfaces, including desks, tables, chairs, and whiteboards.
- Empty trash and recycling bins and replace liners.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, mirrors, and floors.
- Refill soap, paper towels, and toilet paper dispensers as needed.
Building Maintenance:
- Perform minor repairs on furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
- Monitor and report larger maintenance needs or safety hazards to the Facilities Manager or appropriate staff.
- Replace lightbulbs, ceiling tiles, and other small building components.
Grounds keeping:
- Maintain cleanliness of outdoor areas, including sidewalks, playgrounds, and entryways.
- Remove debris, leaves, and snow as necessary.
- Assist with landscaping tasks as needed.
Event Support:
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, and equipment for school events, meetings, and assemblies.
- Ensure spaces are clean and ready for use after events.
Health and Safety Compliance:
- Follow and enforce health and safety regulations, including proper use of cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Ensure all cleaning products and chemicals are properly stored and labeled.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents, and emergency clean-ups.
Additional Duties:
- Lock and unlock doors, windows, and gates to secure the building as needed.
- Support other staff during emergencies or unexpected situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager or school leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in custodial work, cleaning, or building maintenance (preferred).
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers and vacuum cleaners.
- Knowledge of safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, climb, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Other Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Must pass a background check and fingerprinting in accordance with school policies.
Work Schedule:
This position typically requires specific hours, e.g., 9:00 AM–4:00 PM with a half an hour lunch, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend shifts for events or emergencies.
