Job Summary:

Fabrication Machinist A is responsible for operating, programming, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce high-quality precision parts and components. They work with various materials such as metal, plastic, and composite materials, and are responsible for performing regular maintenance on the machines to ensure they are running at optimal levels.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Program and set up CNC machines based on blueprints, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Monitor and adjust machine settings to ensure the quality of finished parts.
  • Inspect finished products to ensure they meet the required specifications and make any necessary adjustments to the machines or programming as needed.
  • Feed inventory levels to the supervisor.
  • Provide general assistance.
  • Keep the work area organized and clean.
  • Perform regular maintenance on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubrication, and replacing worn or damaged parts.
  • Cut various types of materials on both automatic and manual saws.
  • Responsible for lathe operations such as facing, boring, turning, knurling, parting, grooving, drilling, tapping, threading, and use of steady rest while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies and procedures.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of Machining Processes: A good understanding of machining processes, including milling, turning, grinding, drilling, and CNC machining, is essential. Knowledge of various cutting tools, speeds, and feeds is also important.
  • Ability to Read Technical Drawings: Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints is crucial for understanding design specifications and tolerances.
  • Precision Measurement Skills: The ability to use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to ensure accurate dimensions and tight tolerances is essential.
  • Material Knowledge: Familiarity with different types of metals and materials commonly used in machining, including aluminum, steel, titanium, and various plastics, is beneficial.
  • CNC Programming and Operation: Experience in programming and operating Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines is often required for more advanced machine shop positions.
  • Safety Awareness: A strong commitment to workplace safety and an understanding of safe machine operation practices are critical in any machine shop environment.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong mechanical skills and an understanding of machine components and functions are important for troubleshooting and performing basic maintenance tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: The ability to focus on the details of a task, including precision and accuracy, is crucial in ensuring the quality of machined parts.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to troubleshoot and solve problems that may arise during the machining process is valuable in a machine shop setting.
  • Teamwork and Communication: The capacity to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with supervisors, colleagues, and other team members is essential for productivity and safety.
  • Education and Training: While not always mandatory, a formal education in machining or a related field, as well as completion of a vocational program or an apprenticeship, can be advantageous. Many employers also look for relevant certifications or on-the-job training.
  • Experience: Prior experience working in a machine shop, whether through internships, apprenticeships, or previous employment, can provide valuable hands-on experience and demonstrate practical knowledge.

Physical Demands

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to observe, talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel, walk, reach with arms and hands, work with soldering materials. Occasionally stoop, kneel, crawl, and kneel, lift objects up to 50 Lb., may be required.
