Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience
Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment and any potential post-accident drug test as these positions are deemed safety sensitive. Regardless of Minnesota statute, marijuana and other drugs will disqualify individuals from initial and continued employment.
Desirable Qualifications:
Enrolled in an Engineering degree program or closely related field. Understanding of the principles and practices used in the civil engineering field and focused on the transportation system. Desired candidates should have a strong math and/or science educational background.
Nature of Work
Under supervision, assists the transportation division of Public Works. Performs skilled nonprofessional civil engineering work of moderate difficulty in construction inspection, material testing, computerized design drafting, mapping, surveying, and related engineering support responsibilities. Uses computers, surveying instruments and drafting equipment in the preparation of transportation construction plans, and in making quantity calculations in the office. Employees in this position will spend most of their time in the field but may occasionally be asked to assist in an office setting. Work in the field may be hazardous and dirty. Assignments and instructions are received orally and in writing. Work is spot-checked in progress and reviewed upon completion. Guidance is available if required, however the employee is expected to work independently according to prescribed procedures.
Examples of Work
- Provide roadway and bridge construction oversite
- Receive and maintain volume and weight ticket records on construction sites
- Collect and transport material samples from construction site to materials lab
- Performs construction material testing tasks under supervision of a certified technician
- Prepares clear, complete and accurate plans and detailed drawings for construction projects
- Prepares and maintains maps and drawings
- Answers questions for the general public regarding maps and construction plans
- Assist with field traffic studies including gathering, summarizing, tabulating and analyzing traffic data
- Assists with permits and transportation programs
- Performs related duties as required or assigned

- Working knowledge of the principles and practices used in engineering
- Knowledge of applicable tra?c laws, ordinances and regulations
