What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern - Sheriff's Office position at Olmsted County?
Current college student pursuing a degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.
Priority will be given to students that require an internship as part of their 4-year program.Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.
Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 3, 2025.
The position offers opportunities to explore different areas and responsibilities related to work as a Deputy Sheriff. Opportunities will include work in patrol, investigations, training and emergency management. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.
- Assists and explores investigates complaints, disturbances and crimes and collects evidence.
- Assists and explores responding to emergency and non-emergency calls and provides necessary assistance.
- Learns about civil process and warrants.
- Performs special projects.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Some knowledge of state and city laws and county ordinances relating to criminal acts.
- Some knowledge of highway regulations and what constitutes a violation.
- Some knowledge of current police practices and methods.
- Some knowledge of what constitutes evidence in the prosecution of criminal violations.
- Some Knowledge of Olmsted County roads and geography.
- Some Knowledge of human behavior and social and economic problems.
- Skill in verbal and written communication including documentation through report writing.
- Skill in the use of computers and technology.
- Ability to direct traffic.
- Ability to understand and appropriately respond to mental health issues.
- Ability to act quickly and decisively with good judgment in difficult and stressful situations.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Ability to treat the public courteously and with firmness when the occasion demands.
- Ability to operate all Sheriff’s Office equipment.
