Campus Security Officer

Salary: $47,988- $64,440*

Classification: Campus Security Officer

Reports to: Campus Security Sergeant

Olympic College Campus Safety and Security Department has an opening for a full-time Campus Security Officer. The Campus Security Officer will perform general campus security work to protect life and property; enforce laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures; maintain order; prevent and investigate incident reports and crimes on campus and provide customer service to all members of the campus community. Olympic College is a public two-year community college accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities that educates more than 13,000 students a year.   • Olympic College Bremerton is centrally located in Bremerton, Washington on a 33-acre site.
  • Olympic College Poulsbo is a 20-acre campus located in North Kitsap County providing convenience for students from Bainbridge Island and the northern part of the Kitsap Peninsula.
  • Olympic College Shelton is a 27-acre campus located in Mason County.

Essential Functions

  • Patrol a designated area on foot or in a patrol vehicle to enforce institution rules and regulations, local, state and federal statues, laws and ordinances.
  • Inspect buildings, inside and out, and grounds for prowlers, fire, property damage or other irregularities.
  • Direct and regulate traffic, investigate accidents or crimes, administer first aid, issue citations for violations, gather evidence, locate and interview witnesses, appear in court, as required.
  • Operate departmental communication and technical equipment, answer telephone inquiries, receive reports of criminal or suspicious activity, dispatch foot and mobile units, be dispatched as a foot patrol or mobile unit, operate communication and emergency alert systems, monitor, manage and reset alarm systems as needed.
  • Prepare, type, interpret and distribute reports.
  • Maintain surveillance of an area suspected of criminal or disruptive activity.
  • Assist city police officers, county deputy sheriffs or Washington state patrol troopers incases of emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, in the field environment, away from institution as assigned or in the office environment.
  • Perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years police, campus security or military law enforcement experience.
  • Valid WA State Driver's License
    • OR
  • Associate's degree in police science, criminal justice, allied public safety or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of full time college course work in police science, criminal justice, or allied public safety field.
Successful Applicants Will

  • Demonstrate knowledge of rules governing access to grounds, buildings, and specialized areas, rules of behavior and conduct, general safety precautions and fire hazards, methods and procedures in dealing with clients, visitors, staff, methods, and procedures for searching for escapees and violators, firefighting equipment and fire prevention methods, first aid, report preparation and writing, observation skills, law enforcement basics, investigation procedures, electronic security systems
  • Learns rules, procedures, and policies and enforces them in a consistent and equitable manner
  • Follow written and oral instructions
  • Meet emergencies and employ effective courses of action
  • Write clear, correct, concise, and complete reports
  • Investigate incidents and obtain pertinent information
  • Use good judgment in observing and detecting suspicious situations
  • Communicate appropriately with customers, staff, residents, and the general public
  • Apply first aid
  • Operate electronic security, notification, and office equipment
  • Use fire extinguishers on manageable-sized fires for skill level and available equipment
  • Work successfully with individuals from diverse cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MS Office software products and others used by the organization
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to build rapport with community members, students, and staff.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Campus Safety Department policies, procedures, practices, rules, and regulations
  • Possess excellent customer service skills; including building and maintaining internal/external customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of diversity and the benefits of a commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the Olympic College mission, vision, and values.

Additional Information

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time classified position scheduled to work 40 hours a week, with a salary range of $46,596 - $62,568. All classified positions start salary at Step A, when you have completed six months of probation, you will receive a 5 percent pay increase. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and this position is covered by the Washington Public Employees Associate (WPEA) Union.
