Job Title:  Bindery/Printing Operator - Printing Publications

Location:  U.S. Mills Building, 4031 N. 30th Street, NE  68111

Reports To: Printing & Publications Supervisor

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 12 month, 261 days/Non-Exempt

Salary Schedule:  Salary Grade 32U

 

 

Position Purpose:  The Bindery Operator will run and maintain machines that bind printed pages to produce books, magazines, catalogs, and other publications per requests from schools and departments.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Set up and efficiently operate machines which collate, stitch, glue, fold, pad, cut, wrap, and bind items such as booklets, handouts, forms, etc.
  • Adjust machine settings for different types of jobs, including paper size, folds, and other specifications.
  • Monitor the output of the bindery machines to ensure that finished products meet quality standards.
  • Perform quality checks throughout the production process to prevent errors or defects.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of materials to prevent damage.
  • Review of job jackets needing bindery based on requested completion date, scope and size of bindery services needed, and current setup of bindery equipment.
  • Ensure bindery work is completed on time and according to production schedules.
  • Prepare finished products for shipment, ensuring proper packaging and labeling.
  • Work closely with the production team, copy operators, and other departments to meet deadlines.
  • Communicate job progress, delays, and issues with supervisors or team leaders.
  • Entry of production stages (time and materials) for the printing order that had been selected into MIS system.
  • Maintain accurate records of production counts, material usage, and job completion.
  • Movement of completed printing order to the appropriate location for subsequent processing.
  • Performance of routine operator maintenance on bindery equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor mechanical issues with bindery machinery.
  • Serve as backup to Printing & Publications Copier Operators, and cross train in their duties.
  • Follow all industry safety standards to ensure a safe working environment.

 

Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

 

Equipment: 

  • This position may require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers and scanners.

Travel:  Travel is not required.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations.
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work in an office environment.
  • Ability to lift, move and reposition objects and materials - frequently exerting force equal to lifting fifty (50) pounds.

 Interrelations:

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of a High School diploma and/or equivalency. 
  • One or more years of on-the-job training as bindery equipment operator preferred.
  • Knowledge of related printing, bindery, equipment, and processes preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude, good coordination and dexterity skills required.
  • Both math measurement and English skills required.
  • Ability to operate all bindery and related equipment in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Mechanical aptitude to perform routine operator adjustments on equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and carry out written and oral job instructions.
  • Ability to recognize and maintain acceptable levels of both quality and production output.
  • Ability to withstand and meet demanding production schedules.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to operate equipment while standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain records accurately.
  • Ability to work as a leader or team member on group projects.

Terms of Employment:

 

This position is treated as a full-time exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements for the position (e.g., Paraprofessionals obtaining “Highly Qualified status,” etc.), as identified and maintaining all licenses, certificates, and requirements for your position throughout employment.
  • A background check which demonstrates to OPS that background is acceptable for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine ability to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
