About the position:
The Fiber Splicer maintains and installs FTTP, FTTDP, FTTN/FTTLA projects, performing night maintenance, new builds, and responding to emergencies. They must be willing to travel, work on call, and demonstrate self-motivation, teamwork, and diligence. Responsibilities include installing and maintaining the company's broadband network, focusing on fiber optic cable splicing and troubleshooting. Technicians prep and splice fiber using various methods, troubleshoot and repair using optical test equipment, and work with cables ranging from single fiber to 288 counts, including performing ring cuts when necessary.
What you will do:
- Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environment; Perform power meter testing; All other duties as required.
- Perform an assortment of tasks required to make cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and testing of fiber optic cables, using OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometers) and Power meter and Source.
- Perform an assortment of tasks to install and maintain equipment of the fiber broadband network.
- Perform an assortment of tasks associated with fiber optic splicing, including fusion splicing and splice closure preparation during approved times or maintenance windows.
- Locate underground fiber-optic cables.
- Perform record-keeping tasks associated with daily activities, including material usage forms and other plant maintenance forms.
- Perform tasks associated with splicing cut sheets and splicing diagrams.
- Perform an assortment of tasks related to preventive maintenance of the fiber network (aerial and underground), including performing regular inspections of fiber paths, removing trees, rehanging splice closures and snowshoes, etc.
- Maintains buildings and grounds to ensure they are safe, presentable, and in good working order.
- Operate bucket truck safety, climb ladders, and operate other equipment using safe practices.
- If you are assigned a company vehicle, you will be responsible for stocking, cleaning, and reporting maintenance needs to Fleet Manager.
Qualifications:
- 2 years of fiber splicing experience with a focus in main line splicing and break-fix splicing.
- This job will include traveling 2-5 days a week. You will receive hotel accommodations and per diem for every night you spend the night.
- Must be comfortable with heights.
- Overtime is required and you must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays dependent on the job and the company's needs.
- Must be comfortable with an on-call rotation and performing night maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of computer programs, smart phone, electricity, and electronics
- Understand basic safety principles.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees across departments courteously and professionally.
- Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and effectively prioritize multiple projects.
- Ability to lift no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
