Job Description and Summary:
We are looking for someone to fill a dual role as a pre-press artist and department supervisor. As a pre-press artist, you will be preparing artwork and design files for client review and production, ensuring accurate color profiles, image resolution, and layout for multiple large format print devices.
As the pre-press department supervisor you will oversee the entire pre-press department, managing a team of artists and eventually print technicians to ensure smooth workflow and quality control throughout the preliminary printing process, including file preparation and color management.
*This is not a creative position. We utilize the customer’s artwork assets and digitally prepare them for print production on in-house and sub-contract equipment.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
Pre- Press Artist:
- File manipulation: Receiving design files from clients, adjusting image sizes, resolution, and color profiles to meet client and printing specifications. Perform “preflight” check for required fonts, colors, sizing, resolution and other needed components to ensure completeness prior to submitting to printer.
- Layout design: Creating page layouts, including text placement, image arrangement, and pagination for print materials. This may include designing layout from client ideas, sketches or general descriptions as well and using print ready files.
- Color correction: Adjusting colors to match requested Pantone or Spot Colors, ensuring accurate color reproduction across different substrates.
- Font management: Selecting and managing fonts to ensure compatibility within the print process.
- Proofreading: Checking for errors in text and layout before final output.
- Client Proofs: Creating client ready proofs to approximate the final printed piece for review and approval. Collaborating with clients to understand their design needs and address any pre-press concerns mostly via email and phone.
- Internal and External Communication: Professional Communication within Departments along with Vendors and Clients is required to ensure the product is to the client and product specifications.
- Troubleshooting: identifying missing or problematic components of a job and communicating accordingly with team members and supervisor to come up with solutions.
Pre-Press Supervisor:
- Team management: Overseeing the work of pre-press artists, technicians, and operators, assigning tasks and deadlines.
- Quality control: Ensuring all pre-press files meet printing standards, including color accuracy, resolution, and proper file formats.
- Workflow optimization: Managing the pre-press production workflow to meet deadlines and maximize efficiency.
- Technical expertise: Staying updated on the latest pre-press technologies, software, and printing methods.
- Training and development: Training new pre-press staff on industry standards and software usage.
- Troubleshooting Resolutions: identify solutions to problems.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat) *Experience in Fiery and/ or Caldera a plus
- 5 years of Pre-Press experience
- College Degree/ Certification not required but considered a Plus
- Knowledge of the digital printing process and print file preparation.
- Excellent problem-solving skills: as we work with many custom product options.
- Ability to interpret work orders and pertinent information regarding each project
- Comfortable working in a collaborative environment with several different departments.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines with enthusiasm and positivity.
- Self-Starter with the willingness to take initiative.
- Strong attention to detail, while maintaining a Sense of Urgency
- Knowledge of Vector Based Design, Preflight, Typesetting and other File Prep
- Excellent Communication skills internally, with Clients, and with Vendors.
