What are the responsibilities and job description for the Submarine Educator position at OMSI - Oregon Museum of Science & Industry?
The Submarine Educator educates OMSI guests about the Blueback submarine while simultaneously discussing relevant scientific concepts that are meant to inspire visitor curiosity about naval history and technology. Educators provide visitors a rare glimpse into the experience of living and working on a submarine by providing an overview of submarine history, as well as pointing out major engineering innovations of the Blueback and its role in the evolution of underwater technology.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Provide interpretive tours to groups of up to 20 people;
- Perform submarine queuing responsibilities, which includes promoting the submarine and museum experiences in the OMSI lobby;
- Complete submarine cleaning, maintenance, and administrative tasks as assigned;
- Perform daily submarine opening and closing duties. Complete corresponding checklist when needed;
- Execute all submarine safety and security protocols in order to protect staff, volunteers, and visitors;
- Maintain working knowledge of submarine and naval history and current affairs.
Working Conditions
- This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;
- This position is regular part-time scheduled for 20 hours/week;
- This position requires working on weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings;
- Physical Demands: 5% sitting, 90% standing, 5% lifting/carrying/pushing 50 lbs.;
- Vision Demands include:
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less)
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
- Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
- Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
- Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships)
- Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)
- Environmental Demands include:
- Wet or humid conditions (non-weather)
- Outdoor weather conditions
- Work in small, enclosed spaces
- Noise Levels include:
- Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
- Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment)
Secondary Job Responsibilities
Provide support to the Submarine team. Secondary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Collaborate with and support volunteers throughout the museum;
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Submarine Supervisor or Lead Educator.

- Developed communication skills, with an emphasis on presentation and public speaking;

PREFERENCES:
- Knowledge of military/naval history and technology;
- Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
- Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English).
Education & Work Experience
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED;
- 6 months of demonstrated experience working in a public-facing, customer service environment.
PREFERENCES:
- Navy or military background;
- Demonstrated interest in history;
- Working knowledge of one or more technical areas such as electronics, electrical, HVAC, information technology, plumbing, or machinery.
