On the Road to Wellness is a nonprofit mental health peer support organization dedicated to empowering individuals in their recovery for over 35 years. We provide free, peer-led support programs where people can connect, heal, and grow.

 Position Overview

 The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for leading the organization’s operations, programs, finances, and partnerships. This role requires a balance of strategic leadership and hands-on management, ensuring that On the Road to Wellness remains financially stable and participant-focused.

 The ED must have lived experience with mental health recovery and a strong commitment to peer-led support. They will oversee staff, budget, compliance, and community engagement while maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 Schedule & Work Hours

 ·       Full-time, Monday–Friday

·       Evening and weekend hours as needed

 Key Responsibilities

 Leadership & Strategy

 ·       Work closely with the Board of Directors (BOD) to develop, implement, and revise strategic initiatives and organizational policies based on the evolving needs of members, staff, and the community.

·       Ensure the organization remains peer-led and true to its mission.

·       Identify opportunities for growth, partnerships, and service expansion.

·       Represent On the Road to Wellness in the community and advocate for peer support.

 Program Oversight

 ·       Oversee daily peer support programming and ensure smooth operations.

·       Work with staff to address participant needs and improve services.

·       Ensure proper documentation of attendance, incident reports, and program impact.

Financial & Business Management

 ·       Develop and oversee the budget, ensuring financial stability and compliance.

·       Manage fiscal planning, reporting, and daily financial operations.

·       Research and pursue additional funding sources, including grants and partnerships, to support organizational growth.

 Staff Leadership & Workplace Culture

 ·       Hire, train, and support senior-level staff and consultants while fostering a mission-driven team culture.

·       Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive work environment.

·       Provide coaching, feedback, and leadership development.

·       Address staff challenges such as workload, communication, and team dynamics.

 Community Engagement & Partnerships

 ·       Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, social service agencies, funders, and media to increase visibility and expand partnerships.

·       Represent the organization at community meetings, presentations, and advocacy events.

·       Explore collaborative opportunities to expand impact.

 Board Relations

 ·       Provide monthly updates to the Board on finances, operations, and strategic initiatives.

·       Attend monthly board meetings and participate in committees as needed.

·       Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience required; master’s degree preferred.

·       A compassionate, collaborative leader with strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills—able to foster a supportive and inclusive work environment while effectively engaging with staff, participants, and community partners.

·       Proven leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and empower teams, make strategic decisions, and oversee daily operations without direct managerial responsibilities.

·       Strong financial and business management skills, including budgeting, compliance, and operational oversight.

·       Lived experience with mental health recovery and a commitment to peer support.

·       Must hold a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential or obtain it within one year of hire

Preferred:

 

·       Leadership experience in nonprofits, peer support, mental health, and social services.

·       Knowledge of peer support models and recovery-oriented approaches.

·       Experience managing budgets, staff, and nonprofit operations.

·       Familiarity with state and federal regulations affecting peer support.
