Castleman disease is a benign (non-cancerous) disorder that involves an overgrowth of cells in the body’s lymph nodes, typically found in the chest and abdomen. Multicentric Castleman disease, a rare and poorly understood illness carries a poor prognosis. With only a handful of Castleman disease experts in the country, patients with the disease commonly spend a long time being incorrectly diagnosed and are rarely located near an expert who can treat their condition. Because of the lack of knowledge about this condition, those few experts have worked to educate other doctors on how this disease presents and what treatments help keep the disease from critically impacting patients’ lives. Dr. Lang worked closely with one of these experts, Dr. van Rhee, while he treated a patient here in Cincinnati.
I am glad I can be the first author in collaboration with Dr. Van Rhee who is a renowned expert in this field. Increasing awareness of this rare disease is the first step to early diagnosis. Idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease is uncommon, and it is also under-recognized, which results in healthcare providers not identifying the symptoms resulting in a delay in diagnosis and treatment for the patient. Hopefully, this will raise awareness and help other physicians diagnose and treat this condition more effectively,” adds Dr. Lang.
OHC shared the inspirational story of OHC patient Carl Guenther in July of 2023, where his rare condition, Castleman disease, was diagnosed by OHC’s Dr. Evan Lang. Read that story here .
