Summary
Under minimum supervision, performs various diagnostic tests on system equipment, analyzes test data, documents results, and recommends future action to ensure continued safe and reliable service of equipment.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Directly or through others, the incumbent under minimum supervision will:
- Performs tests on insulating medium of substation equipment to determine its integrity. These tests include power factor, dielectric breakdown, moisture content, total combustible gas, and dissolved gasses.
- Performs station battery and battery charger diagnostic tests, trouble-shooting, and facilitates repairs/replacements to ensure the reliability of D.C. power to the substation equipment.
- Records and analyzes test results (trend analysis) to determine equipment status as to its suitability to return to service, or specifies needed repairs.
- Develops wiring diagrams reflecting test circuits from equipment schematics to be used for subsequent installation and testing activities.
- Performs checkout, calibration, troubleshooting, and repairs of test equipment as needed.
- Performs switching operations and initiates actions to restore service at transmission and distribution substations to ensure testing is done safely and without interruption of electrical service to customers.
- Participates in evaluating and determining the acceptability of new test equipment and computer systems / programs to ensure the devices will meet or exceed company standards and test requirements.
- Prepares and processes documentation as required, to ensure test results are clearly understood and appropriate actions taken.
- Performs all work consistent with established safety procedures.
- Directs and coordinates the work of others assisting in diagnostic testing.
- Responsible for preparation of the power equipment to be tested (ground, disconnect, reconnect, unground) and making necessary minor repairs, if needed.
- Performs training when called upon regarding diagnostic testing, both classroom and field.
- Maintains records including computer databases for test results to ensure historical information are readily accessible for trend analysis in determining equipment condition.
- Analyzes test data to determine the need and schedule for additional testing of suspect equipment.
- Utilizes computer-based maintenance scheduler to ensure electrical equipment is tested in accordance with appropriate maintenance intervals and test results are properly retained for future reference.
- Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.
Education, Experience, & Skills
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
- Associate’s degree in an electrical technology field, or 12 months of Transmission field or prior related industry experience working with and testing high voltage electrical equipment is preferred
- Demonstration of a basic understanding and working knowledge of electrical circuit theory and computer skills preferred.
- Candidates must be willing and able to complete all DRO training requirements.
- Willing and able to respond to routine and emergency call outs.
- Willing to travel to attend training and assist in other areas of the company
- Candidates should have demonstrated leadership abilities.
