Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the Transmission Construction Manager, the Transmission Construction Intern is responsible for assisting the Transmission Construction Coordinator in supporting the development and maintaining project construction schedules, developing and revising Construction Sequence Documents, coordinating construction efforts in the field among various entities, updating construction status information, and communicating as needed on overall project status with multiple parties. The assigned projects are in various stages of activity and are occurring simultaneously in most instances.
The Transmission Construction Intern is expected to work from the office as well as the field, as required, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the role. The environment and working conditions can be physically and mentally demanding. This position requires frequent on-site visits regardless of weather conditions. Issues arise that may require immediate attention, some of which can be resolved remotely, while others require an unscheduled on-site visit. This position can be mentally challenging due to the number of projects assigned as well as changing project conditions which require a "re-shuffling" of project schedules on very short notice.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Transmission Construction Manager, the Transmission Construction Intern will work with the Transmission Construction Coordinator in :
- Reading, interpreting, and understanding transmission project plans.
- Conducting field visits to job sites to evaluate plan construction needs in order to develop detailed construction schedules and work sequence documents.
- Identifying transmission facilities to be de-energized to facilitate construction, and determine sequence, duration, and dates each element will be requested to be out of service.
- Requesting appropriate and timely system outages in the Transmission Outage Application software; determine if outages conflict with other projects in the portfolio; and, if so, decide on priority of conflicts and resolve to the least degree of uncertainty.
- Developing construction schedules, as well as revising, and maintaining construction schedules and detailed construction sequence documents to minimize facility outages and risks to the electric system.
- Developing a "Remediation Plan" and modifying work sequence documents / clearances, as needed, if conflicts arise because of new information provided at pre-construction meetings.
- Coordinating various meetings such as District status, pre-bid, pre-construction, customer-related, with Construction Manager, engineers, etc., as necessary, and provides solutions to any identified issues.
- Communicating effectively on overall project status and maintains relationships with multiple parties both internal and external to Oncor to resolve construction and coordination issues.
- Making suggestions to construction contractors for potential alternative work plans to maintain the construction schedule.
- Requesting line and equipment Clearance and Holds from Transmission Grid Management (TGM).
- Submitting and updating project Network Operations Model Change Request (NOMCR) information to T&D Services and determine if the NOMCR date submitted in the model needs to be changed to meet the construction schedule
- Reviewing projects near the end of construction schedules for completeness and readiness to be placed in service, and if issues are identified, developing and communicating a "resolution plan" to the Construction Manager and other responsible parties.
- Prioritizing multiple tasks to maintain project schedules.
- Providing recommendations to the Transmission Construction Manager to improve processes, practices, and procedures to accomplish goals in a more efficient and cost effective manner.
- Learning and applying the Oncor Transmission and Contractor Safety Handbook requirements.
- Possessing basic knowledge of Transmission line and substation construction activities and materials.
- Ability to learn the computer skills required to use normal office programs and other company programs (MS Office Suite, ODV, ProjectWise, iTOA, PETE, scheduling tool, etc.)
- Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.
Education, Experience, & Skills
Strong project management skills with experience managing large projects / programs.
