Job Summary
The Lead Teacher is responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, coordinating the curriculum, and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Teachers must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in order to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Teacher must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults in order to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide teacher assistants, and resolve parental concerns.
Our school is located in the heart of the Old North End and our classrooms explore the local playground, the Burlington library, and even the intervale. Our school has three classrooms spanning 6 weeks to 5 years old. We have a large gross motor space that all the children access regularly.
Duties
- Curriculum Planning and Implementation: Coordinates and implements educational curriculum by developing activities through observation of children's interest in play, developmentally appropriate practices, and Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS)
- Classroom Management: Ensure a well-organized, clean, welcoming and safe classroom environment that fosters learning and respect. Create a classroom schedule and routines for consistency that moves children through various activities such as snack time, group activities, bathroom reminders/diaper changes, lunch, nap time, outside explorations and more.
- Child Supervision: Supervise and monitor children at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Positive Relationship Building: Developing caring relationships with each child by attending to their needs, interests, questions and more. Use positive, encouraging language with children and implement positive behavior management strategies
- Staff Supervision: Leads by example; encourages teaching team success through modeling and coaching.
- Parent Communication: Build positive relationships with parents through regular communication about children's progress, concerns, and updates. Organize parent-teacher conferences as needed.
- Assessment: Track and assess children’s developmental progress using observation and documentation. Adjust teaching strategies to meet individual learning needs, using a variety of strategies to support development across multiple domains.
- Behavioral Guidance: Guiding children through social interactions with peers and encouraging prosocial behaviors which includes supporting students with conflict by intervening and modeling appropriate strategies for resolution such as taking turns, swapping toys, and more.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all licensing and regulatory requirements including health, safety, and nutrition standards. Maintain accurate records including attendance, incident reports, and health information.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with current trends and developments in early childhood education through ongoing training, attending staff meetings and other professional development opportunities.
- Daily Chores: Maintain a clean and safe environment by performing daily cleaning tasks such as sweeping floors, disinfecting surfaces, and ensuring proper cleanliness of materials and supplies ensure all health and safety standards are met and any additional needs are addressed promptly.
