Overview
The Stroke Clinical Director will work independently and collaboratively with Stroke attendings, Neurointerventional Surgeons, the Stroke Quality Coordinator, Stroke Physician Assistants, Quality, departmental office staff and nursing leadership to promote clinical and quality excellence. The Clinical Director is also responsible for hospital wide stroke nursing education, community outreach projects, stroke seminars and conducts the quality review of the program with the stroke quality coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and supervision to meet nursing requirements that adhere to the New York State Department of Health guidelines for stroke center designation.
- Leads and serves as a subject matter expert for the recommendations of accrediting organization, The Brain Attack Coalition (BAC) and various American Stroke Association (ASA), American Heart Association (AHA) clinical practice guidelines.
- Collaborates with the FDNY Chief Medical Officer for stroke update and teaching of prehospital crew.
- Assist the Stroke Medical Director in applying for HFAP designation for Comprehensive Stroke Center status. Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and supervision to continue to meet nursing and PA requirements that adhere to HFAP guidelines.
- Maintains knowledge of evidence-based practice changes, new research and new recommendations from American Stroke Association and accrediting agencies e.g., TJC, HFAP etc.
- Plans and collaborates the development of an annual community outreach event for public education of stroke awareness.
- Plans for monthly community outreach that’s held in the lobby
- Oversees stroke education delivery to ensure that impacted clinical staff meets the education requirements, as mandated by TJC, HFAP and other stroke designating agencies
- Maintains a minimum of eight (8) hours of stroke education annually.
- Assists in the development and coordination of patient education – forms Stroke Family Support Group
- Project management in collaboration with other stroke centers’ leaders and program directors and coordinators.
- Prepares the hospital for stroke related certification survey
- Maintains all necessary standards required for ongoing certification –i.e., Policies and Procedures (P&P)
- Identifies opportunities for improvement & reports this information to the Stroke Medical Director & Performance Improvement Quality Assurance (QAPI) team
- Efficiently and effectively plan, organize, direct, and implement institution wide stroke education for nurses, NPs, and PAs. Work with other Directors of Nursing to ensure yearly compliance with educational CEU requirements.
- Provides internal and external resource for education of assessment and treatment of stroke patients.
- Provides education to the Emergency Department & Intensive Care Unit in best practice stroke care. This includes the needs of the stroke patient who arrives within the treatment window, including tPA delivery, post TPA monitoring, and management of real and potential complications
- Educates and trains ancillary department employees in the specific expectations of primary stroke centers’ performance metrics e.g., door to CT, door to needle times, etc.
- Together with the Neurologists, oversees the education of members of the EMS system, including paramedics and EMTs
- Teaches Stroke Program update to new RN hires
- Educate, coach and guides the clinical team in the daily needs of the stroke patient, including guidance with NIHSS, patient discharge documentation requirements etc.
- Works closely with the Stroke Quality Coordinator and Quality, Risk & Compliance departments to ensure that quality metrics of stroke center certification, performance improvement data and standards of care; are appropriately collected as well as reported to the stroke certification agencies including but not limited to HFAP and NY State DOH. In addition, serves in a leadership role to conduct stroke quality meetings as well as PI measures as undertaken with other departments.
- Oversees stroke metric data collection for advanced primary or comprehensive certification by the stroke quality coordinator
- Oversees data reporting by the Stroke Quality Coordinator to HFAP and DOH & GWTG for purposes of data reporting on an ongoing basis
- Collaborates with the Stroke Medical Director in guidance of the Stroke Committee, teams, and work groups as well as in concurrent review of stroke data on a biweekly or monthly basis with the Stroke Quality Coordinator as well as co-chairs the QI/QC and PI processes of the stroke department as well as stroke committee.
- Rounds with nurses weekly to ensure compliance with HFAP and other accrediting agencies’ standards; guides them when deficiencies are identified.
- Maintains, reviews and updates P&P; CPGs & binders in key areas: ED, MICU, SICU, PACU etc.
- Coordinate with other health care providers for any departmental issues including ED, Medicine, and Radiology etc. and arranges interdepartmental meetings.
- Work collaboratively with team leadership and nursing/PA staff to ensure meaningful use is being implemented and executed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Stroke Medical Director.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferrably in Nursing.
Experience:
- Minimum two (2) years as a Stroke Cooridnator or equivalent experience, required.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to establish goals, set priorities, oversee the short and long-term deliverable of department objectives, provide education, and have exemplary interpersonal skills.
- Ability to be decisive in clinical decisions and know when to seek appropriate help and guidance.
- Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic medical record system, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
- EPIC knowledge preferred.
Licensure, Certifications:
- A current, valid New York State Licensed Physician Assistant (PA), or Registered Nurse (RN), or Nurse Practitioner (NP), required.
- Maintain Registered valid Licensure, Certifications, and yearly continuing nurse education credits in stroke, required.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
- Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
