Snapshot of Daily Duties:
Hours: Monday through Friday – 7am – 3:30pm, occasional fill in 6:00am - 2:30pm as needed for departmental needs
- Precisely and accurately perform a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures, including specimen accessioning, grossing (prosecting), tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, performing special stains, operating H&E autostainer, and operating instrumentation for immunohistochemical stains.
- Assists with grossing as required by the pathologist, must meet all CLIA requirements for grossing/High Complexity Testing.
- Accession specimens, including assigning case numbers to pathology specimens, verifying specimen jars correspond to the pathology requisition.
- Understand proper tissue handling to minimize cross contamination.
- Prepare precision cuts (sections) using a microtome, and stains according to established procedure for routine and special stains.
- Coverslip and prepare finished slides for review by the Pathologist.
- Maintain stock of necessary reagents for all stains and processing utilized in the department.
- Maintain equipment, instruments, and cleanliness of working area.
- Assist in retrieving blocks and slides for review and filing slides and blocks.
- Assist in data entry with the lab LIS system.
- Comply with all state, federal, CLIA, CAP, and other professional regulations as well as department rules, polices, and procedural manuals, including adherence to safety regulations.
- Comply with OSHA and regulatory requirements by following established procedures in order to maintain a safe laboratory environment and to meet all accreditation standards.
The Must Haves:
- HT(ASCP) certification required or registry eligible.
- Two (2) years experience in an accredited anatomic pathology and cytology laboratory.
- Functioning knowledge of anatomy, chemistry, physiology, and experience in enzymes, histo-chemistry and immunoperoxidase stains required.
