Description
The Surgical Scrub Technician (CST) in the Operating Room plays a crucial role in maintaining a sterile environment and assisting during surgical procedures. This position involves preparing the operating room, aiding in patient preparation, managing sterile supplies and equipment, and ensuring compliance with surgical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare the operating room with necessary sterile supplies and equipment before surgical procedures.
- Assist with patient skin preparation and draping prior to operations.
- Set up the sterile instrument table and assist the surgeon during operative procedures.
- Maintain an inventory of sterile supplies, count sponges, needles, and instruments, and handle specimens appropriately.
- Clean the operating room between cases, ensuring cleanliness and readiness for the next procedure.
- Position patients on the operating table and provide assistance until the surgical team arrives.
- Assist the surgeon with gowning, masking, and gloving before and after procedures.
- Hold retractors, cut sutures, and sponge incisions as a member of the operating team.
- Assist the Anesthesiologist in preparing patients for anesthesia and during operative procedures.
- Aid in post-operative dressings and the application of casts.
- Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of the operating room area to maintain antiseptic conditions.
- Transport patients to and from the operating room as required.
- Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment before and after use.
- Order operating room supplies and maintain adequate inventory levels.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Comprehensive knowledge of operating room technology and sterilization procedures.
- Familiarity with hospital sanitation practices and equipment maintenance.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician program or NYS licensed practical nurse program.
Certification/Licensure:
- National Board of Surgical Technician and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification.
- Unencumbered New York State Licensed Practical Nurse license; if hired without certification, must pass certification exam within the first year of employment.
- Current BLS/ACLS certification.
