Job Description : Job Purpose
The purpose of the IV Pharmacy Technician is to assist licensed pharmacists in providing medication and other healthcare products to patients. IV Pharmacy Technicians are also responsible for mixing and packaging chemotherapy infusion drugs. Retail Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medications for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles.
Essential Job Functions
- Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.
- Prepare all IV medication orders.
- Return and credit usable stock to inventory upon discontinuation of order.
- Pre-pack bulk medicines, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and type and affix labels.
- Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests.
- Assists coworkers in stocking medication shelves or other areas of pharmacy with shipments received from vendors.
- Fill P.O. chemotherapy prescriptions in IV Pharmacy
- Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs.
- Establish or maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients.
- Order, label, and count stock of medications, chemicals, or supplies and enter inventory data into computer.
- Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications in current inventory, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
- Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions.
- Key in prescription information in order to produce labels; label products properly.
- Clean and help maintain equipment or work areas and sterilize glassware, according to prescribed methods.
- Restock IV supplies and add measured drugs or nutrients to IV solutions under sterile conditions to prepare IV packs for various uses.
- Maintain controlled substances log.
- Fill prescriptions for P.O. chemotherapy and supportive care medications
Data entry
Replenish and deliver all floor stock orders, controlled substances, and medications.

Working conditions
This position requires dealing with other staff in the building. A qualified applicant must be able to work independently or with others. This position works in the retail pharmacy of a busy outpatient oncology / hematology clinic. This employee will have direct contact with patients, some of whom are very ill.
Physical requirements
This position requires performing the same physical and mental activities repeatedly. The position may also require lifting heavy boxes and the use of stepladders to retrieve supplies from high shelves. This position requires that the employee be able to stand and walk for up to eight hours a day.
