Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker (Instrumentation/Electrical)

The Department of Water Environment Protection (WEP) provides critical wastewater services to Onondaga County’s Consolidated Sewer District. WHAT EXACTLY DOES A WWTP MAINTENANCE WORKER (I/E) DO?

The work involves responsibility for assisting skilled instrumentation and/or electrical maintenance positions by performing a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks while learning the more skilled aspects of the work. Employees in this class, in learning and perfecting their craft skills, may perform journey level installation, maintenance, and repair activities under supervision of or after receiving detailed instructions from higher level employees. The nature of the work does not require planning, design, supervision, or layout of work or diagrams of malfunctions. However, employees in this class may function as lead worker by directing a small number of subordinates in performing unskilled and laboring tasks concerned with instrumentation and electrical maintenance and repair. The nature of the work may require employees in this class to operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment. This is an important role at WEP, and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists more skilled employees in the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment found in wastewater treatment plants and systems by using a variety of tools and equipment in the performance routine maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Performs, under the general supervision of a higher-level employee and by reading plans, diagrams and specifications, installation, maintenance, and repair work, such as maintaining and cleaning small electric motors, installing and maintaining sensors, recorders, and indicators, and calibrating equipment, taking resistance tests, and taking amperage readings.
  • May act as lead worker in directing a small number of subordinates in performing unskilled and laboring tasks with instrumentation and/or electrical maintenance.
  • Fulfills reporting requirements relating to work performed and materials used.
  • Learns and perfects craft skills to perform journey level activities associated with industrial instrumentation and/or electrical installation, maintenance and repair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A) Two (2) years of experience or its part-time equivalent, in maintenance and repair work which relates to electrical construction and maintenance or maintenance and repair of electronic equipment or, B)graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college/university with an associate degree, or its equivalent in technical or apprentice training, in electronic or electrical engineering technology or an engineering or technical curriculum which relates to electrical construction or maintenance or maintenance and repair of electronic or, C) an equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). Special Necessary Requirement: When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.

ANNUAL SALARY: $56,789-$62,619

CIVIL SERVICE GRADE: CSEA / 9

POSITION TYPE: Permanent; Full Time: 40 hours/week
