What Exactly Does a WWTP Maintenance Helper Do?
The work involves responsibility for assisting semi-skilled wastewater treatment plant mechanical maintenance positions by performing a wide variety of relatively unskilled tasks while learning the more skilled aspects of the work. Employees in this class perform the heavier, less difficult, and more repetitive activities and tasks involving the use of elementary skills in the mechanical trades, including machinery repair, as applied to wastewater treatment plant and related process equipment maintenance. This is an important role at WEP, and the ideal candidate will have various responsibilities including, but not limited to:
❖ Assists more skilled employees in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment plant mechanical equipment, process piping, and related appurtenances by using a variety of tools and equipment in the performance of relatively unskilled tasks.
❖ Performs, under the specific instructions and direct supervision of a higher-level employee, the heavier, less difficult, and more repetitive activities and tasks associated with wastewater treatment plant maintenance and related process equipment.
❖ Learns to maintain and repair wastewater treatment plant and related process equipment, such as piping, pumps, blowers, conveyors, and motors.
❖ Learns to operate tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair work, such as drills, lathes, routers, hydraulic flushers and rodding machines.
Minimum Qualifications:
A. One (1) year of work experience or its part-time equivalent, in maintenance and repair work which relates to the overhaul, rebuilding, or repair of motorized or mechanized equipment or,
B. Satisfactory completion of training of at least one (1) year’s duration which relates to the overhaul, rebuilding, or repair of motorized or mechanized equipment; or,
C. One (1) year of work experience performing unskilled labor in a wastewater treatment facility; or,
D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) and (C).
Special Necessary Requirement: When required to operate a motor vehicle, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated.
Annual Salary: $42,522 - $46,677
Civil Service Grade: CSEA / 5
