ABOUT THE POSITION: This position will be assigned to the Onondaga County Department of Social Services – Economic Security.
The mission of the Department of Social Services-Economic Security is to accurately and efficiently administer economic support and services to county residents in a respectful manner where each person is treated fairly. Our staff is responsible for following state and federal guidelines for delivering appropriate assistance. The delivery of services will be conducted in a safe and supportive environment for members of our staff and the public. Our goal is to help people achieve their highest level of independence by providing quality service in a timely, efficient, and dignified manner.
This Case Manager position is for a poverty reduction program in DSS-ES – called . This is a new pilot that will focus on families that are on temporary assistance. We will be providing wrap around case management services, with a focus on mobility mentoring and goal setting, to help parents get to a living wage and get out of poverty. We will be utilizing the Aspen Institutes five (5) areas of family wellbeing to help and guide the parents. This is a new initiative that is exciting and innovative.
The case managers will be responsible for all casework related activities needed in assisting families meet goals and navigate community and government-based systems.
The qualified candidate will provide casework activities to families including but not limited to, phone and/or person to person contact/interviews, assistance with establishing priorities and setting goals, conducting intake assessments, developing case plans, assistance with referrals to appropriate service providers and coordination with community agencies. For the 2Gen Onondaga program, this person will also provide mobility mentoring (training from EMPATH) & coaching to families, monitoring/evaluation of progress and documentation of case activities and events.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide participants with support.
- Work with clients, schools, day care settings and other community-based agencies to assist clients in meeting their needs and increasing their overall well-being.
- Engage with children and families in a solution focused and strengths -based manner.
- Develop case plans, including goal setting.
- Monitor progress for families.
- Assist with housing and childcare needs for families. Also, any additional needs within the Aspen Institute’s five (5) areas of family wellbeing – including social capital, economic assets, education and child development, health & wellbeing, and postsecondary education & employment.
- Ability to set limits and boundaries that maintain the helping role of a case manager and assist others with setting healthy boundaries.
- Participate in case conferences/team meetings/reviews as needed.
- Provide clear and concise individual case narratives, referrals, summaries, and other reports.
- Actively participate in staff meetings, supervision, professional and in-service training sessions
- All other duties related to casework management for individuals and families in this program.

Qualifications:
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree.
