What are the responsibilities and job description for the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position at Onondaga County Health Department WIC Program?
Are you a passionate breastfeeding parent who wants to support and empower others on their breastfeeding journey? Join our team as WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor! In this rewarding role, you'll use your personal breastfeeding experience to provide guidance, encouragement, and support to WIC participants. This position offers flexible hours, our Peer Counselors typically work anywhere from 10-20 hours per week.
The Onondaga County Health Department WIC Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, referrals and nutritious foods to qualifying individuals.
Typical Work Activities:
- Complete the required United States Department of Agriculture WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum training, and attend on-going training to keep breastfeeding knowledge and skills current.
- Receive referrals made by WIC staff and maintain a caseload of WIC prenatal and breastfeeding participants as assigned by the Breastfeeding Coordinator and/or Peer Counselor Coordinator.
- Make routine periodic contacts with assigned caseload of WIC participants via phone, text, email, or in-person with all participants assigned based on the Recommended Contact Frequency Guide.
- Provide basic breastfeeding information, including benefits, successfully initiating breastfeeding, and overcoming common barriers.
- Assist in preventing and handling common breastfeeding problems and concerns, and yield appropriately to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert or other qualified staff when outside scope of practice or as needed.
- Keep accurate record of all contacts made with WIC participants and document all contacts and attempted contacts in NYWIC.
- Assist with breast pump program based on assessment by Qualified Nutritionist or Competent Professional Authority, including review of: pump sanitizing instructions, safe handling and storage of pumped milk, tips for returning to work, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality of WIC participant information.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have breastfed at least 1 baby (you do not need to be currently breastfeeding)
- Preference is given to applicants who have participated in the WIC Program
Other Requirements
- Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and have the desire to support mothers in achieving their breastfeeding goals.
- Must exhibit professionalism, good judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
- Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow oral and written directions.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Good knowledge of basic breastfeeding information.
