Medical Billing Technician
The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Medical Billing Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for processing and submitting claims, reviewing medical documentation for accuracy, and ensuring proper billing procedures for services provided by the department. This position is key to ensuring the accuracy of patient billing, maximizing reimbursement, and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review patient medical records and coding to ensure accuracy and completeness for billing purposes.
- Process and submit insurance claims (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, etc.) per department guidelines and regulations.
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims, working with insurance companies to resolve discrepancies and ensure prompt payment.
- Assist patients with billing inquiries, including providing explanations of charges and payment options.
- Verify insurance eligibility and coverage details for services provided.
- Maintain detailed records of claims, adjustments, and payments.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and confidentiality requirements.
- Process patient billing statements and work with the finance department to ensure accurate record-keeping.
- Review billing reports and work with other departments to ensure timely and accurate billing practices.
- Stay updated on changes in billing regulations, coding procedures, and insurance requirements.
- Coordinate with clinical staff to ensure that all services are properly documented and billed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Medical Billing and Coding, Health Information Management, or a related field preferred.
- Certification in Medical Billing and Coding (e.g., CBCS, CCA, or similar) is preferred.
- Previous experience in medical billing or coding, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, coding (ICD-10, CPT), and insurance billing procedures.
- Familiarity with healthcare software and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing claims and billing information.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills to interact with patients, insurance companies, and internal departments.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and maintaining patient confidentiality.
