Public Health Educator – Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities

The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a qualified candidate to support the Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities (ATFC) program throughout the project area of Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oswego counties. ATFC will engage and educate community leaders and members, leverage resources, and mobilize organizations to advance local tobacco control efforts. The Public Health Educator (Community Engagement) will build and guide work to accomplish evidence-based tobacco control action consistent with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Bureau of Tobacco Control goals.
Responsibilities of the Public Health Educator (Community Engagement) include:
· Maintaining professional knowledge and understanding of tobacco control interventions as well as the NYS Prevention Agenda;
· Identifying opportunities throughout the region to educate community stakeholders about tobacco-control interventions and strategies;
· Delivering community education/awareness presentations to stakeholders throughout the catchment area;
· Developing and ensuring implementation of local community mobilization efforts;
· With input from Reality Check youth, collaborating with the Public Health Educator (Youth Action) in the development of community education/awareness materials and campaigns;
· Building and maintaining professional relationships with community leaders and state and local elected officials to engender support for tobacco control actions;
· Collaborating with other ATFC program staff to ensure comprehensive program administration across the catchment area.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Health Science, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or Health Communications; or,
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness or Nutrition and one (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education;
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Human Services, Social Work or Psychology and two (2) years’ experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education; or,
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Master’s degree in Public Health or Health Education.
Desired Experience:
· Knowledge of community engagement principles and the ability to motivate and community members, organizations, and decision-makers at every level to effectively plan and implement tobacco control action and policy change within the community;
· Knowledge of community health, public health, and the regional health care delivery system;
· Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with relevant community stakeholders and organizations;
· Knowledge and skills in interpreting and communicating data, public health policy, and media advocacy;
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking experience;
· Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid New York State driver’s license and vehicle or provide evidence of mobility within assigned community. The ability to attend required meetings and trainings as directed by NYSDOH is required. Local travel and overnight stays to maximize travel opportunities may be required.
Position Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. Candidates must have the ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends, to support community education events.
Note: This is a grant-funded position.
