The Onondaga County Health Department, Division of Community Health, is seeking a qualified candidate to support the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC) program. This program works cooperatively with local schools and surrounding communities to establish and support sustainable healthy communities as places where it is easier to practice healthy behaviors.
The Public Health Educator will work to identify and recruit worksites and other community settings to help create food environments that make healthier choices easier for consumers by: helping sites implement food service guidelines to increase the availability of health foods; conducting assessments and creating action plans for
community sites; providing technical assistance; assisting in community and school engagement activities; creating materials for behavioral design strategies; and assisting in identifying municipalities to propose complete streets policies and active-friendly routes to everyday destinations. This position also maintains strong community partnerships, including with school districts, food pantries, early child education providers, non-profit agencies, worksites, and community sites. The position reports to the Program Coordinator for CHSC.
Responsibilities of the Public Health Educator will include:
Maintain professional knowledge and understanding of respective program;
Identify and recruit worksites and other community settings;
Prepare and deliver community education/awareness presentations to community agencies and worksites;
Develop community education/awareness materials and campaigns and management of social media platforms;
Work collaboratively with other OCHD programs and colleagues to leverage resources;
Attend required NYSDOH trainings and applying skills to program planning;
Participate in regional and statewide planning meetings and conference calls;
Administer all program activities in adherence to the OCHD’s commitment to promoting health equity;
Collaborate with other program staff to ensure comprehensive program administration across the catchment area;
Assist in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned; and
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Health Science, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or Health Communications; or,
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness or Nutrition and one (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education; or,
C. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Human Services, Social Work or Psychology and two (2) years’ experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education; or,
D. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Master’s degree in Public Health or Health Education.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid New York State driver’s license and vehicle or provide evidence of mobility within assigned community. The ability to attend required meetings and trainings as directed by NYSDOH is required. Local travel and overnight stays to maximize travel opportunities may be required.
Position Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. Candidates must have the ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends, to support community events.
Note: This is a grant-funded position.
