POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for completing daily workflow tasks in one or more of the functional service areas of NMDP Biorepository Services, a time-sensitive and high-throughput laboratory facility that manages more than 10 million biological samples, to assist in the mission of finding matched unrelated donors and advancing research for patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplants. In service of this mission, each month Biorepository Services sends thousands of sample collection kits, handles more than 35,000 new biological samples for Be The Match Registry, and receives more than 1,000 valuable donor and patient research samples. ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Fulfills Kit and Sample Service Requests:
- Completes daily workflow tasks in one or more of the functional service areas of Biorepository Services. Functional service area examples include registry sample receiving, registry sample shipping, QC sample program, NMDP research sample program, custom research sample program, KitMaker sample collection kits, and online registration kits.
- Utilizes care and judgment to safeguard the integrity and utility of the biological samples and/or collection kits that Biorepository Services provides, including the data associated with the kit/sample lifecycle record.
- Completes work within the performance and safety goals set for service fulfillment and in conformance with established standard operating procedures and work instructions.
- Evaluates incoming service orders with pro-active identification of potential issues for fulfillment, with either completion of customer follow-up/resolution or escalation to others, as needed.
Provides Next-Level Support:
- Supports Biorepository Specialist(s) in one or more functional service areas, by gaining a deeper knowledge of systems and business processes for the sector.
- When assigned, steps in to keep the standard workflow of the service area operational in the absence of the Biorepository Specialist.
Other Accountabilities:
- Maintains complete, clear, and accurate electronic and paper records for easy identification and retrieval, including documentation of quality assurance issues.
- Assists with routine equipment performance monitoring, equipment maintenance, and facility maintenance (i.e., cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, trash removal, and receiving incoming supplies).
- Other tasks and projects as assigned by Biorepository Management.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- Basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database software skills.
Ability to:
- Perform laboratory procedures for handling biological specimens.
- Perform work with strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
- Communicate well by verbal, written, email and telephone means; provide good customer service.
- Collaborate with good interpersonal skills.
- Must exemplify our Be The Match Standards.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological sciences discipline, including laboratory coursework.
- Upon evaluation, equivalent related post-high school biological/medical laboratory work experience and/or education may be substituted for the degree requirement.
- Two years laboratory or other related work experience, or one year directly related NMDP laboratory experience.
- Experience handling biological materials.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (Additional qualifications that may make a person even more effective in the role, but are not required for consideration)
- Education including chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and/or cell biology.
- Biological/medical laboratory work experience.
