Job Description
This position will perform intermediate skilled work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, heavy equipment and maintenance equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Facility Foreman.
Position Responsibilities
Performing maintenance and repair on all types of automotive, heavy equipment and all other maintenance equipment; ensuring safe operation of vehicles and equipment.

- Performs preventive maintenance inspections; services and repairs equipment as necessary.
- Adjusts, repairs and services vehicles and construction equipment.
- Installs rings and bearings and effects proper adjustment.
- Overhauls and repairs carburetors and clutches.
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
- Overhauls, tunes and adjusts engines using specialized and standard test equipment.
- Maintains and repairs one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the disposal of refuse at County Landfill.
- Performs electrical work on automotive equipment; troubleshoots problems and repairs or replaces defective parts; repairs and adjusts lights, generators, starters, air conditioning systems, etc.
- Performs road service calls and makes necessary repairs at the scene.
- Performs small engine repair on power saws, mowers, weed eaters, et al.
- Repairs flat tires.
- Compiles a list of necessary parts as needed.
- Helps maintain tool shop and work area in clean and orderly state.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment including electronic diagnostic equipment used in the repair of cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, welding, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; ability to diagnose defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment; ability to detect by inspection worn or broken automotive parts; performs repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline, diesel and hydraulic powered engines; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; working knowledge of hazards and proper safety precautions involved in operating and repairing motorized heavy equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Graduation from high school or equivalent and considerable experience in repairing automotive and heavy equipment or completion of coursework in heavy equipment / transport technology from an accredited program.
Valid Drivers License
Class A or B CDL preferred
Physical Requirements :
Must be able to daily and repeatedly stoop, kneel, bend and climb beside, onto and underneath various equipment to perform diagnosis and repairs. Must be able to effectively perform repairs. Must be able to routinely and physically lift / position various parts to perform repairs / service and manually handle parts up to 50 pounds, as well as use mechanical hoist / lift.

The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%.
Vacation Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases.

Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.
