Job Description
Performs intermediate semiskilled work attending to waste being transported to landfills, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Landfill Supervisor.

Position Responsibilities
- Drives and operates roll-off truck to pick up and dump trash containers.
- Drives dump truck to collect large materials, oils and other liquids from convenience sites.
- Addresses landfill patrons' problems or concerns.
- Directs the public to the proper location for disposing of materials; answers questions; provides information.
- Keeps landfill site clean and orderly; collects and disposes of loose debris and refuse on Landfill grounds.
- Maintains recycling sites for items such as pallets, shingles, and metal.
- Prepares electronics for recycling.
- Separates recyclable materials from other solid waste materials.
- Inspects off loads to ensure only acceptable items were dumped.
- Contacts vendors for pickup of recyclable materials and for storage supplies.
- Performs minor maintenance of roll-off truck; uses rolling magnet to pick up nails on roadways; performs lawn and minor road maintenance.
- Prepares pre-trip reports.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
General knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to landfill operations; general knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of environmental services; ability to determine compliance with federal, state and County laws and regulations governing landfill operations; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in
writing; firmness and tact in enforcing regulations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, associates and the general public.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the solid waste industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to cold, exposure to heat, and work is generally in a moderately noisy location.

North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.
NC401k
The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%.
Vacation Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases.
Sick Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.
Paid Holidays
County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary.
