What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Peer Support Specialist position at Onslow County?
The Certified Peer Support Specialist should be able to draw upon personal life experience in his/her work with clients and feel comfortable with the self-disclosure of some aspects of those firsthand experiences with mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and/or treatment and recovery, while maintaining appropriate boundaries. The Certified Peer Support Specialist is a fully integrated team member who provides highly individualized services in the community and promotes individual self-determination and decision-making. The Certified Peer Support Specialist also provides essential expertise and consultation to the entire team to promote a culture in which each individual’s point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities.

- Develop, implement, and manage overdose response/follow-up program in coordination with partner agencies such as law enforcement, EMS, hospital emergency department, and treatment clinics.
- Promotes wellness management strategies, which includes delivering therapeutic interventions (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Planning or Illness Management and Recovery) and employment services.
- Assisting clients by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance as needed
- Accompanying clients to meetings and participates in meetings of community groups to advocate for consumer needs, leading recovery dialogues/self-help sessions with clients
- Modeling effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers
- Providing advice to clients on empowerment skills and successful community living
- Collaborate with the Onslow County Community Relations Team to develop education and marketing materials including social media and press information
- Collect and input data gathered from on call events that could be shared with various agencies
