Summary
Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the operation, repair and maintenance of the water and sewer collections system, related systems, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned Crew Leader.

Essential Functions
Deliver excellent customer experiences in all interactions with internal and external customers.
Operate dump truck, back-hoe, track hoe, combination truck and trailer, trencher, boring machines, asphalt and concrete saws and related equipment.
Repair and maintain water and sewer systems; installing meters; performing maintenance responsibilities as assigned.
Loads and unloads equipment onto trailer; secures equipment for transportation.
Repair major and minor leaks in water and sewer systems.
Install individual water/sewer services such as water/sewer taps.
Locate water/sewer lines and valves.
Repair driveway and landscaping of work sites.
Assist other crews on job sites when requested.
Participates in cross-training exercises such as hydrant & valve demo training.
Requires the ability to work outside normal work hours in emergency and on-call situations.
In case of disaster, either natural or man-made, as a condition of employment employee will be called upon to serve ONWASA customers. Service to customers during a disaster will result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this class description.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the repair and maintenance of water distribution/sewer collection system; general knowledge of water/sewer line construction methods and techniques; Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and reading of water meter; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos; ability to write correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization; ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations; ability to work in difficult work stations for extended periods; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers and the general public. Have knowledge of MUTCD traffic control planning process, standards, work zone technology and policies.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Education and Experience & Special Requirements
High school diploma or GED with experience in water and wastewater operations.
Must meet the minimum driving standards set by ONWASA and have possession of a Class A CDL driver’s license in the State of North Carolina or the ability to obtain within two years of hire.
Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
Ability to become C Distribution certified, Work Zone Safety Supervisor certified, and AED/CPR/First Aid certified and NC Flagger certified.
